Aerospace, Foods and Nutrition, Public Speaking, Clothing and Fashion Show, Entomology (insects), GIS (Geo Information System), Health, Home and Housing, Horticulture, Robotics, Photography, Bowling, and dozens of others. PSAT

Sophmores and Juniors can register to take the PSAT at the local school district for the same cost charged local students usually between $10 and $13. All districts are supposed to make this information easy to find, some do a better job than others. It's a good idea to contact the district as early as possible so that they make sure they have enough tests available. This is an easy and inexpensive way for students to get a feel for the SAT.

World Water Monitoring Day™ (WWMD)

World Water Monitoring Day™ (WWMD) is an international education and outreach program that builds public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by engaging citizens to conduct basic monitoring of their local water bodies.

An easy-to-use test kit enables everyone from children to adults to sample local water bodies for a core set of water quality parameters including temperature, acidity (pH), clarity (turbidity) and dissolved oxygen (DO). Results are shared with participating communities around the globe through the WWMD Web site.

World Water Monitoring Day is officially celebrated on September 18; however, the monitoring window was extended for the first time in 2009 from March 22 (World Water Day) until December 31. Participants are encouraged to celebrate with WEF and IWA in September or to observe their own WWMD anytime during the extended window. The deadline for submitting data to the WWMD database is December 31. The coordinators of WWMD, the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and the International Water Association (IWA) plan to expand participation to one million people in 100 countries by 2012.

Children's Fine Arts Series

The 2010-2011 schedule is posted. The Children's Fine Arts Series presents performing arts programs of excellence for children, ages 3 to 10, to educate, enrich and entertain, so that our children may come to appreciate and enjoy these riches through their own experiences. Bring a child and share the wonder and excitement! The performances are one hour in length to accommodate the attention span of the young child, and are chosen to enrich, educate and entertain. Music, dance, drama, and song create an environment rich with color, sound, and movement to delight the senses of our young audience. Visit http://childrensfineartseries.org/index.html for more information.

Children's Vegtable Garden

Texas AgriLife Extension Service provides an opportunity for children 8-13 in age to learn about gardening by growing their own vegetables through the mentoring of Bexar County Master Gardener volunteers. Each child is allotted a 3.5’x 28’ plot at the beautiful San Antonio Botanical Garden. Children will have fun growing different types of seeds, herbs, vegetables, and ornamental annual flowers. Weekly educational gardening presentations will stimulate these young minds. The children will also participate in fun, hands-on Junior Master Gardener activities.
In order to gain the most from the learning experience and to help ensure successful growing, participants are required to attend all sessions (two absences are allowed). Families are welcome to share the gardening experience with their child(ren); however, parents should remember that this is the child’s plot and learning experience.

Summit Christian Academy Info Meeting

Summit Christian Academy will be hosting an informational meeting Saturday, June 19th at 10:00 a.m. The meeting will be at Boerne First Baptist Church, Family Life Building. Please visit www.scatx.net for more info. Come meet Mimi Enriquez, Principal and Liz Sweet, Dean of Academics.

Summit Christian Academy is a University-Model School® located at Boerne First Baptist Church. University-Model Schools allow parents more involvement in their children's education by combining the traditional private classroom environment with homeschooling. Classes are attended Tuesday and Thursday with optional electives on Wednesday. This allows for more family time on alternate days as parents guide their children through detailed lessons given by the teacher to complete their student's education. This formula allows for better character development as quality relationships between parents and children are fostered.

Space is still available at UTSA middle and high school robotics camps

The UTSA Interactive Technology Experience Center has openings in summer robotics camps for middle and high school students. Supported by a grant from the AT&T Foundation, the hands-on camps teach children about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in an engaging environment, helping them learn that STEM careers are accessible and rewarding.  Although the two camps for elementary students are filled, space is still available in the middle school and high school summer robotics camps. The open camps include:

Participants will conceptualize, build and program two robots using the VEX Robotics System and Easy C programming software.

This camp is for students who have attended an NXT camp or competition as well as students who have participated on a robotics team through their school or a civic organization. During camp, participants will build and program three to four robots using the LEGO Mindstorms NXT robotics kit and Robo C software, a derivative of C++. The camp includes time in UTSA Mars Yard, which replicates the terrain on Mars.

July 12-July 23: Summer Camp NXT for Middle School Students (Level One)
The beginner summer camp is for students with little or no robotics experience. Participants will build and program three to four robots using the LEGO Mindstorms NXT robotics kit and NXT-G software, and it includes time in UTSA Mars Yard.
Registration for all camps must be completed online at the ITEC website and requires prospective campers to submit a short essay on why they want to attend camp. Additionally, a $70 nonrefundable fee, payable by check only, must accompany each registration.
Housed in the UTSA College of Engineering, the Interactive Technology Experience Center (ITEC) is a four-year project that began in 2007 with funding from the AT&T Foundation. The ITEC mission is to inspire youth by creating an environment where they can understand how engineering, science and technology shape our lives and the future of our world. The center's focus areas are robotics, telecommunications, scanning electron microscope applications and design for manufacturing.

The goal of speech camp is to give those who are afraid of public speaking a confidence at the podium, and those who are already comfortable speaking in front of others the tools they need to become more effective communicators. We will be doing this through study of how to write and deliver an effective speech, and many hands-on activities and practice. Students will learn about three different types of speeches: Platform, Interpretation, and Limited Preparation. Each speaking style is different, and each provides a student with an arsenal of unique skills they will use for years to come, whether in competitive speech, or in life as a whole.

9am - 12 noon           College Planning Begins in Middle School            Fee: $50
Parents, college admissions are very competitive.  While all students may not attend college; all should be prepared to go to college. Imagine discovering in their senior year that your child does not have the academic credentials, required admissions tests, and participation in extracurricular activities, etc., to gain admission to his/her college of choice.
1:30 pm - 4:30 pm    Record Keeping for College Admissions               Fee: $50
(or How to Find What You Need When You Need It)
Your child's school keeps their academic records, but who keeps a record of their extracurricular activities and volunteer activities?  Parents!  This workshop will help you keep your sanity while collecting these important records until you need them for college admissions and scholarship applications.
Saturday, July 10th
9 am – Noon        Uncovering Gifts and Talents       Fee: $50 +  Materials fee (tbd)
We are each endowed with gifts and talents unique to who we are and will set us on our path to a fulfilling career and life.  How do we know what they are?  Do our children have to trudge through a job or career they hate because “that’s what dad did” or “that’s what everyone thinks I should do because I am good at __________________”?  70% of college students switch their major once, 20% twice and 10% 3 or more times during their college career. There is a way, as parents, you can help your child discover their unique God given talents.  Stop the extra expense of more time in college or the possibility that they could spend 10, 20, or 30 years in a career they hate.
12:30 – 4:30 pm    Preparing Your High School Student for College   Fee: $50
(whether they want to go or not!)
Help your student get the best college preparation during high school.  Learn to craft a high school plan to earn college credits early and gain the skills necessary to succeed in college.  Plan the steps for a focused college search and discover how a well-written resume can frame your student’s skills, achievements and goals and make your student stand out.
Saturday, July 31st
9 am – Noon        Transcripts- the Ins and Outs to Satisfy Admissions Fee: $50; Materials fee- $15
How to construct a transcript that will not cause your application for a college or scholarship to be placed in the “need to call” pile of the Admissions office.  Parents will fill out a dummy sample transcript  during this workshop and will take home a CD with a blank transcript form that is accepted by major colleges nationwide.  This particular workshop is geared toward home school parents, but has information parents of traditionally schooled students might find useable.

1:30 – 4:30 pm    Alphabet Soup of College Testing Fee: $50
Are you wading through the confusing alphabet soup of standardized test names and finding it difficult to determine what tests your student should take and when?  If so, this workshop will help you cut through the confusion by providing a comprehensive overview of tests available that you may use to gauge your student’s progress (Iowa, Stanford), tests that may be required for college admission (SAT, ACT, Accuplacer), and tests that can be taken to earn college credit (CLEP, DANTES, AP).

San Antonio Lemonade Day

Lemonade Day is a nation-wide event that teaches kids the skills they will need to be successful in business and in life!  With our user-friendly materials, kids learn to set goals, develop a business plan, establish a budget, seek investors, provide customer service, and give back to the community.

Lemonade day is the perfect opportunity for a community to show kids they care and train the next generation of entrepreneurs through a fun, engaging, experiential activity!

When is it?
Lemonade Day is the first Sunday in May -- May 2nd, 2010. So, kids participating across the country, including in San Antonio, will be setting up stands on the same day!  Many kids set up their stands in the morning and sell lemonade until sundown.

Who can participate?
Youth of all ages can participate (with adult supervision!). The great thing about Lemonade Day is that the entire community can get involved, from the kids selling lemonade to the adults helping them to the customers buying and drinking the lemonade!

How do I register?
To register for an official Lemonade Day stand and to participate in the event, a parent or guardian must sign a consent form agreeing that a responsible adult will assist and supervise. Register Now.

Do you need volunteers?
Yes!  There are many ways you can get involved:
Registering Kids
Backpack Stuffing
Special Events
Spreading the word about Lemonade Day
Drinking lots of fabulous lemonade!
Contact  sara@lemonadeday.org to learn more!

Can I or my company donate?
Yes, we need investors to make this a success!  If
you'd like to support Lemonade Day San Antonio please click DONATE above.

If your company is interested in sponsoring Lemonade Day San Antonio, we'd love to have you as a partner!  You're not only inspiring future entrepreneurs, you're associating your brand with inspiring future entrepreneurs, which is a fine thing!  We can incorporate your logo on backpacks and/or our web site, create volunteer opportunities for your staff....the possibilities are endless!  Contact sara@lemonadeday.org. or call 210-569-6927.

How can my child's school get involved?
We encourage all public, private and parochial schools in San Antonio and the surrounding areas to get involved. Schools and/or teachers can "take this on" or simply share information with the parents of their students. Ask a representative of your child's school to contact sara@lemonadeday.org or call 210-569-6927 to learn more.

How and when do I get my backpack?
Kids who are registered will receive notification about when and where to pick up their backpacks. If you registered, then we have your email address and will be in touch soon!

What happens to the money my child makes on Lemonade Day?
The young entrepreneurs keep everything they earn - they've worked hard!  In the spirit of a true business, they are encouraged to open a savings account, pay back investors and make a further investment in their community by donating a portion of their profits to a charity of their choice.

So, how does this really work?
Materials:  Each registered child will receive a “how to” Entrepreneur Workbook with lessons on budgets, securing investors, choosing locations, marketing, and customer service. We also provide a Caring Adult Guide for the adult who will be working with the child. These materials are very user-friendly and will be included in the backpack you receive.

Location:  Site selection is an important part of setting up any business!  Kids choose their own sites and are responsible for obtaining permission to sell lemonade on private property.  Please click here for a list of San Antonio parks as possible lemonade stand sites.

Time:  Kids, accompanied by responsible adults, can set up their stands and open for business at any time during Lemonade Day. Do what works best for you! Our suggestion is from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Contest info:  We will hold three major contests as part of Lemonade Day: Best Tasting Lemonade, Best Lemonade Stand, and Best Business. Upon registration you will receive further details about entering the contests.

Bexar County Youth Project Show

I invite all youth to enter the 11th Annual Bexar County 4-H Youth Project show! Kids do not have to be in 4-H to participate! Kids may enter baking, artwork, photography, sewing, woodworking, crafts, gardening projects, poster design, needlework and quilting, metal projects, and more! All participants receive ribbons. We award 1st through 3rd place in three age categories as well as Best of Division and Best of Show. The 2010 contest will be held May 15 at the Helotes 4-H Center across from O'Connor High School. It's Our CLASS Southwest Area Support Group

This is a support group for families primarily from the South West side of San Antonio, but everyone is welcome. We all need a little support, for parents and homeschoolers alike. We all strive to help our kids learn with care and kindness. We also hope that by homeschooling our children we can form a closer relationship with them. We are the parents and the educators. That's a big responsibility. That's why having a support system is so important. This group is a place to discuss anything about homeschooling and to meet others who school their own children, as well as a place to make friends. It is a secular group and is open to anyone and everyone so please be mindful of others beliefs and opinions.

We also have park day at Miller's Pond Park every Monday from 10-12 a.m. We are new so any input is welcome. Also, if you have any materials-books, curriculum, etc., or even household stuff/clothes or whatever you can think of that you don't use any more and you'd like to give them away, bring them to our park day. It'd be a great way to share and exchange materials. If you have anything you'd like to bring to our park day, such as games for the children to play definitely feel free. It'd be welcomed. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Its_our_CLASS/

Free ACT or SAT Registration for High School Juniors

The College Preparation Program provides opportunities for Texas public school students and districts to take part in certain college readiness assessments. Two components of the program are now available for the 2009-2010 school year: student-selected testing at grade 11 and district-administered testing at grade 8.

Grade 11 Testing Program
Students enrolled in 11th grade in a local Texas public school district or charter school in the 2009-2010 school year will have the opportunity to select one college readiness assessment at state expense. At this time, students may take a June administration of either the ACT or the SAT, and the state will pay the cost of their regular registration fees to the extent that funding is available. Students who have already registered and paid for the April or June ACT or the May or June SAT may be eligible to be reimbursed by the applicable vendor.

Due to program funding restrictions, there is a limit on the total number of registrations available. The TEA estimates that approximately one-third of current 11th graders will be able to take advantage of this program. Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis until all the available registrations have been assigned.

Vouchers from the two testing companies (ACT, Inc. and the College Board) will be sent to individual high schools. Students must obtain a voucher from their guidance counselor or from the testing company in order to register for a test. Students will use these vouchers to register for one test of their choice to be administered in June 2010. Students who have already registered and paid for an eligible administration of the ACT or SAT may qualify for a refund. Eligible test dates are ACT—April 10, 2010, and June 12, 2010, and SAT—May 1, 2010, and June 5, 2010.

Have you ever thought about going camping, but didn’t have the equipment, or know where to go or what to do? Come join Texas Outdoor Families at Lake Somerville-Nails Creek on April 10-11 and at Lost Maples SNA on April 24-25.
The Texas Outdoor Family is a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department program to teach groups or families the basic outdoor skills during this weekend workshop.  We provide all the necessary camping equipment including tents, cooking gear and sleeping bags.  All you will need to bring is your food and personal items.  Our guides will teach you all you need to know for a great overnight camping experience from setting up a tent to activities to do in the park. You are not out there alone!   All for only $55 per family of up to six people.   There is a 16 family limit per workshop.
We offer multiple weekend workshops throughout the Spring and Summer months, but here is what is coming up in your area:

Lake Somerville/Nails Creek (April 10-11): http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/lake_somerville/
Lake Somerville State Park offers gently rolling terrain, covered with dense stands of yaupon, post oak, hickory, blackjack oak, and water oak forests, past scenic overlooks and water crossings. This park provides for those who like to hike, bike, walk, swim, go boating and skiing. Flag Pond and numerous other duck ponds, marshes and bogs offer smaller water bodies to explore. The trail has one of the best spring wildflower displays in the Texas State Park System. Many species of birds and wildlife may be observed along the paths, including white-tailed deer, fox, coyote, raccoon, rabbit, waterfowl, and quail. For those who like to fish, the lakes are full of white bass, crappie, largemouth bass, and catfish.

Lost Maples (April 24-25): http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/lost_maples/
Lost Maples State Natural Area covers multiple scenic acres on the Sabinal River. The park has many natural features that make it a beautiful place to visit, including canyons, streams, grasslands and even features uncommon foliage like the Uvalde Bigtooth Maple. Rare species of birds, such as the Green Kingfisher, can be seen year-round. The endangered Black-capped vireo and Golden-cheeked warbler nest and feed in the park in spring and early summer. You can view multiple wild animals including gray fox, white-tailed deer, armadillo, raccoon, bobcat and rock squirrel. Come see why Lost Maples was voted Park of the Month in September 2007!

On-Going Activities

Folk Dancing

ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING Happens once a month, the first Saturday of the month, 7:30 pm at Incarnate Word Univ next to Central Market. The dances are partner dances done in a long line of couples, as seen in the latest Pride and Prejudice movie. There is no footwork or steps to learn, the couples dance figures that move them up and down the line. It is a great activity for the whole family. Suggested donation for adults is $2.00, and kids are always free. From Broadway, enter the driveway across from Denny's and follow the signs back to the Garden Room.

INTERNATIONAL DANCING Takes place every Friday at Lions Field Rec Center, 2809 Broadway (at Mulberry) Yes it is a senior center, but young people are invited for international dancing on Fridays, 7:30 pm. These dances are easy and mostly line or circle dances from countries like Romania, Greece, Israel, and France, among others. The dances and music are traditional, we learned them from dance teachers from the respective countries. So it's a great opportunity to learn about other cultures, choose an activity that provides some exercise, and suitable for the whole family, because there's no smoking or alcohol here! Kids come free, and for adults $2.00 suggested donation. Wear comfortable, sensible shoes, and casual clothes.

Homeschool Swim Team

The Home School group is open to all ages and grade levels. It is recommended that children be able to swim at least one length of a 25 yard pool to enroll. Instruction is designed to accommodate a variety of swim abilities. The Wave Home School program is geared toward helping Home Schoolers fulfill their PE requirement, while becoming water safe, better swimmers and having fun at the same time.

The group trains at the Alamo Heights High School (6900 Broadway) on Monday, Wed. and Friday at 1:15 pm. Your children can attend any or all of those 3 days that work best. Home School swimmers may compete at the weekend meets, if desired. By participating in an early afternoon practice, the evening hours belong to your family. Please call Coach Susan, for try-out information: 210-488-1923.

Visit http://www.sawave.org/ for more information.
