another day for homeschoolers to participate. So, now you can choose
to either come on Monday, Wednesday, or both! The time is the same for
both days, 12:30-2:00. Both classes are free of charge.
I have set up a Yahoo group to help with communication
between us all regarding the class. I will be sending an invitation to
join the group to all of the homeschool group emails that I am aware
of. The yahoo group is:
SAhomeschoolPE@yahoogroups.com and if I've figured it out
right, the way to subscribe is this:

set up a calendar to begin the helpers list. Thanks for

Each year we have a couple of day games to use as education days
for students of San Antonio. We typically have up to 50
different schools represented at each game. This year our day
games will be a Math Day on May 3rd and a Weather Day on May 5th. The
games are at 11:05 and are usually over around 2:00. We have
tickets for $5.50 in the outfield reserved and $6.50 in the upper
reserved, and kids are allowed to bring in sack lunches on these days.
In addition to the baseball game, their will be educational programs
and games throughout the day to help stimulate learning. I
wanted to try to reach out to the homeschooling community to see if
there would be an interest in coming out to one of those games or even
one of our regular games. Please let me know if you are
interested in getting involved. I would love to meet with you
about this. Tiffany

Baptist Church, Family Life Building room 200.
Summit Christian
Academy is a University-Model School® located at Boerne First Baptist

their children's education by combining the traditional private
classroom environment with homeschooling. Classes are attended Tuesday

more family time on alternate days as parents guide their children
through detailed lessons given by the teacher to complete their
student's education. This formula allows for better character
development as quality relationships between parents and children are
fostered.

reduce the class cost ($175.00) by 10%. I know that we have
wonderful support from the home school community for our performances

My name is Jamie Miranda, founder and coordinator of Haven Home
Educators. After homeschooling my own sons for 15 years, all of whom
are now in college (one in grad school at Texas A & M University, one
at Baylor University, and one at Texas State University), I returned
to college to finish my degree. I have earned a Bachelor of Arts in
English, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and have worked for the past two
years as an English, history, and speech tutor (Tutor V) and now as an
Instructional Skills Specialist at St. Philip's College as I attend
graduate school at Our Lady of the Lake University. I work with
college students daily, teaching them to create outlines; develop
strong theses; strengthen topic sentences; correct grammar, spelling,
and punctuation; and much more with regard to their writing skills. In
addition, I teach high school students to PhD candidates how to
improve their scores on the essay portion of the Accuplacer, SAT, GRE,
TOEFFL, MCAT, and other admissions tests. In that capacity, I have
developed five writing courses:
Junior High Creative Writing
with a focus on poetry and short fiction High School Composition I,
mirroring college freshman composition Advanced High School
Composition, covering critical, biocritical, & historical analyses of
literature Research Writing I -- covering all aspects of research
from finding sources to bibliographies using MLA Formatting
Research Writing II -- same as above but in APA Formatting
All classes are online and consist of a series of weekly modules
emailed to students and parents over the course of twelve weeks. I
limit the number of students in these courses so that I may provide
quality feedback on student work. Comments such as, "Great job" or
"Nice work" do not give students any information concerning the
improvement of their writing skills. I provide a combination of
constructive criticism and praise to build confidence and enable
students to hone their skills as writers. Registration for spring has
begun. In developing these courses, I have combined expressivist,
critical, and process teaching methods to impart skills to students in
what I call a hybridized pedagogy. Even strong writers can benefit
from detailed commentary to enable them to strengthen their writing
further.
The spring courses begin Jan. 29. Space is
limited. Please contact me to obtain course syllabi.
Each 12-week course is $120.00, a fee comparable to local co-ops,
payable in one lump sum or three monthly payments of $40.00. Please
contact me at 210-733-1757,
MirandaWorkshops@aol.com , or
mypinkkoala@aol.com for further information. Space may be
reserved on your word but is not guaranteed until the first payment is
received. Registration deadline is January 25. Improve your student's
writing with these innovative and easy to use workshops.
Our break is almost over and we will be back to our pre-holiday
routines next week. It's a natural time to assess your child's
enrichment activities and make changes to avert boredom and expose
them to new skills and experiences.
Artworks provides the perfect complement to your child's education
and adds a highlight to any day. With classes available for 18-months
to tweens, we have something for everyone.
New students can attend any first
class for a free trial and sign up on your first visit if you wish to
continue!

Sunburst Gymnastics off Bandera and Mainland has expanded their
homeschool program in a big way. They used to have one time
slot for HS'ers once per week (and even that was after regular school
let out!) but they hired a new coach and are now offering classes 9-1
Monday through Friday (actual time available will depend on class
size, child's age/skill, etc) . They are the cheapest I've found
also - $48 mo for one class a week and $80 mo for two classes a week.
http://www.sunburstgymnasticsacademy.com/ is the website.
Contact Coach Melinda Richardson (homeschool and preschool coach) at
210-887-0321 and the Gym's number is 210-680-0944. There is a
free trial class available for new students. Also, another thing
worth mentioning, the Homeschool student rate of $48/mo is $16 cheaper
than the "regular" rate (which is $64).
ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING Happens once a month, the first
Saturday of the month, 7:30 pm at Incarnate Word Univ next to
Central Market. The dances are partner dances done in a long line
of couples, as seen in the latest Pride and Prejudice movie. There
is no footwork or steps to learn, the couples dance figures that
move them up and down the line. It is a great activity for the
whole family. Suggested donation for adults is $2.00, and kids are
always free. From Broadway, enter the driveway across from Denny's
and follow the signs back to the Garden Room.
INTERNATIONAL DANCING Takes place every Friday at Lions
Field Rec Center, 2809 Broadway (at Mulberry) Yes it is a senior
center, but young people are invited for international dancing on
Fridays, 7:30 pm. These dances are easy and mostly line or circle
dances from countries like Romania, Greece, Israel, and France, among
others. The dances and music are traditional, we learned them from
dance teachers from the respective countries. So it's a great
opportunity to learn about other cultures, choose an activity that
provides some exercise, and suitable for the whole family, because
there's no smoking or alcohol here! Kids come free, and for adults
$2.00 suggested donation. Wear comfortable, sensible shoes, and casual
clothes.
The Home School group is open to all ages and grade levels. It
is recommended that children be able to swim at least one length
of a 25 yard pool to enroll. Instruction is designed to
accommodate a variety of swim abilities. The Wave Home School
program is geared toward helping Home Schoolers fulfill their PE
requirement, while becoming water safe, better swimmers and having
fun at the same time.
The group trains at the Alamo Heights High School (6900 Broadway)
on Monday, Wed. and Friday at 1:15 pm. Your children can attend any or
all of those 3 days that work best. Home School swimmers may compete
at the weekend meets, if desired. By participating in an early
afternoon practice, the evening hours belong to your family. Please
call Coach Susan, for try-out information: 210-488-1923.
