LUMINARIA Playwright(s): Adapted for the stage by David Morgan - Based

There
are great risks in bringing your mouse to school. For starters, he'll
ask you for your lunchbox, and then a sandwich, and a snack for later.
You also have to remember to bring a cookie, because you know what
happens when you don't give a mouse a cookie, or even if you do. Still
not satisfied, he'll want to participate in everything from math to
soccer. What's a child to do when he brings a pet for show and tell,
and the pet takes over the school? Join the thousands of Magik Theatre
fans who have fallen in love with Laura Numeroff's hilarious
characters brought to life on our stage.

About The

Bexar County Master Gardeners and other volunteer organizations.
Each child is allotted a 3.5’x28’ garden plot. Children will

annual flowers. Children can also earn their Junior Master Gardener
certification by participating in fun, hands-on activities each week
after they have tended their garden.

the learning experience and to help ensure successful growing,
participants are required to attend all sessions (two absences are
allowed). Families are welcome to share the gardening experience
with their child.
How to Apply: Complete the
application form and submit it to the San Antonio Botanical
Gardenby February 9, 2012. Limited space is available.

At LifeShine, we belive in joining with parents to pray scripture
over their children - cultivating young lives who honor God, love
God's word, work together as a team, respect peers, honor and respect
parents. Our children are learning to be leaders in the community to
"Let their light shine before men in such a way that they may see
their good works, and glorify our Father who is in heaven." (Matt
5:16) LifeShine is an all day educational program and ministry
designed for 1st-8h grade which meets once a week. Classes are taught
by qualified instructors and specialists who utilize a hands on
approach to learning. The elementary classes are intended as
a supplement to a home school curriculum, not as a substitute for
parent led instruction the rest of the week. Students are encouraged
to explore their abilities and learn in a fun, interactive, and
challenging environment. Classes for elementary include daily
devotionals, choir, Recess, Science, Spanish, Drama, and art.
Fall 2012 -Middle school classes are intended to help alleviate the
pressure of teaching the higher level classes. Each week teachers will
have class discussions, introduce new material, assign work throughout
week, and check work. Classes for middle school include Apologia
General Science, IEW (writing), History, Lit, Art, and Spanish.
Our instructors hold to strong Biblical values and strive to honor
Christ in all things. LifeShine is organized as a non-profit
educational enrichment program rather than a "Co-op" and is designed
to give the homeschool parent a weekly break to refresh and be
energized for the rest of the week. Parents are not required to stay
with their children on program days but are required to volunteer.

Four Hundred Years of Struggle and Transcendence Presented by
Gemini Ink and the Estate of Sterling Houston Wednesday, February
15, 2012, 7:00 pm Performing Arts Center at Palo Alto College, 1400
W. Villaret Blvd., San Antonio, TX FREE and open to the public
Tickets are required due to limited seating. Please pick up your
free tickets at Gemini Ink or Palo Alto College Performing Arts Center Box Office, February 6-10, 1-5pm. Limit four tickets per pickup.
We are delighted to announce that we will again present Black and
Blue: 400 Years of Struggle and Transcendence on February 15 to
celebrate Black History Month! The event will be held at the new
Performing Arts Center at Palo Alto College located at 1400 W.
Villaret Blvd. at I-410 South and Texas Hwy. 16.
The late and
beloved San Antonio playwright Sterling Houston (1945-2006) was deeply
committed to the work of Gemini Ink for many years, from his board
service as we entered the 21st century, to his being honored with our
Literary Excellence Award in 2004, to teaching in our Writers in
Communities program, to creating Black and Blue for our Dramatic
Readers Theater.
The piece – featuring four musician/actors –
weaves traditional jazz and blues with African American folklore,
literature, and historical documents from the slavery era into
compelling theater that both mourns and celebrates.
Don’t miss this
performance that one audience member has described as “a virtuosic
display of writing, singing, and telling the truth.”

(210)287-0486 (voice or text) Classes meet weeks of January 16
thru May 12 Wednesdays:
9:00 to 10:15 Elementary (4th to
6th grade) IEW Writing Course
10:30 to Noon Jr. High/High School IEW Writing
Course Thursdays:
11:45 to 1:15 Starting Points –
World View Primer by David Quine Course Descriptions:
IEW WRITING: A Structure and Style course in the mechanics of
writing. The structure portion teaches techniques for writing a
variety of works including the five-paragraph essay, research reports
and persuasive essays as well as narratives, creative writing and
formal critiques. The style portion of the course teaches
techniques to bring their writing to life using “dress-ups”, “sentence
starters” and “decorations” sprinkled throughout the course.
This is not a spelling or grammar course. The course is geared
more toward teaching structure and style rather than content.
The elementary course will cover outlines, narrative stories,
writing from pictures and creative writing. The junior
high/high school course will utilize IEW’s The Elegant Essay
curriculum. The student book should be purchased from
www.excellenceinwriting.com or
www.Christianbook.com
(cost $29). Each course will be 15 weeks. The cost is
$160 payable $40/month or $150 if paid at the first class meeting on
January 18. In addition, any student requiring an IEW Source
Book may let me know and I can have one prepared for them for $10 or
email you an e-copy to print out. It is approximately 100+
pages. The last class day will be May 9, with weeks off March
14th and April 18th. STARTING POINTS: David Quine, the
course author, defines this course as an “Intermediate level world
view course for junior or senior high school”. It is actually
four units covered over a 36 week period. We will be covering
Units I and II from Thursday, January 19 to Thursday, May 10 (with
March 15 and April 19th off). We will determine, via class
concensus, at that time whether to continue the course during the
summer in some abbreviated-type format or complete Units III and IV in
the Fall 2012. Starting Points is described by the
author as an opportunity to teach your child how to “EXAMINE
EVERYTHING”. He goes on to say that Starting Points will enable
the student to examine ideas against the absolute standard of the
Biblical world view. He proclaims that at the end of the
course the student will be able to (1) develop the Biblical framework
for their own life, (2) learn how to examine a variety of ideas as
expressed through literature and movies to evaluate which ideas are
consistent to the Biblical world view, (3) follow the logic of three
different approaches for clearly articulating the Biblical world view
to non-Christians and (4) be ready to begin the three year study of
World Views of the Western World. Completion of the
entire 4 Unit course would count as 1 Bible Credit, 1
Literature/Composition Credit and 1 American History Credit.
Reading covered in Units I and II include: ·
Answers for Difficult Days by David Quine ·
Know What You Believe by Paul Little ·
How To Read Slowly by James Sire ·
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis ·
It’s a Wonderful Life (video) ·
The Wizard of Oz (video) ·
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (Quine edition) ·
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson (Quine
Edition) · The
Deadliest Monster by Jeff Baldwin In addition, the student
will need a copy of Starting Points World View Primer. I found
the best price at
www.ChristianBook.com or
www.rainbowresource.com. Students will need the first three
books listed above for weeks 1 to 8 and their will be reading
assignments before our first class meeting. It is anticipated
that students will spend one to two hours/school day preparing for
this class. This 15 week class will have a tuition cost of
$160, payable $40/month or $150 if paid by the first class meeting.
Students enrolled in a writing or debate class at Crockett Academy
class may take this course for 50% discount. Contact Lee Ann
Crockett for more information or to receive a registration form.
Please feel free to pass this information to other homeschooling
families that may be interested.

Strings Group Classes. Being a homeschool mom myself, I know it's
often challenging to find resources for learning the fine arts in a

string classes from 6 - 8 weeks ending with a concert. My next strings
group class starts Saturday, Feb. 11, and ends on Saturday, March
17th. Three groups are available. The Beginners Class (for those who
have never played a string instrument up to one year's experience)

to 10:45. The Philharmonic Praise Strings (3+ years of experience)
rehearse from 10:45 to 11:45. A combined concert will be performed on
Saturday, March 17th. The music performed is a combination of
classical, just for fun melodies, and worship music. All classes are
held in the CBC choir room. The cost of the class is $120 with a
registration fee of $10. More information can be found at

Please cross post to other list and share with other
homeschoolers, friends and family.
The homeschool theater discounts are open to homeschoolers, friends
and family. Here is the current offer codes to use. For some of
these, we use the same offer link each time (BAA, TUS), while for
others it changes from show to show (DSM).
Because of the diversity of the homeschool community, each family
determines what is appropriate. You really can't make hard and fast
rules about ages. Some kids sit still just fine at a fairly young age,
while others need to wait. These are live touring Broadway
productions. A typical show will last 2 hours with a brief
intermission. From time to time they also include specials that are
especially suited for young children that will be shorter. Many of
these shows also have teaching guides available online.
Do takes some time prior to the show to explain Theater Etiquette.
Arrive early, no eating/drinking/chewing gum. Don't talk during the
performance, the actors can hear you on stage and it bothers the other
patrons. Turn off cell phones. At the end of the performance during
curtain call, don't rush for the exits. It's very rude to the actors.
Questions email Susan Frederick at

Have you ever
wondered what life would be like if you were an insect instead of a
person? This hilarious play weaves three separate diaries into
one entertaining musical and tells the story of three insect children
who go to school together, play together, and grow up together. This
show gives you a bug’s eye view of what the world is like when you are
a young worm, a spider, a fly, and other insects trying to grow up.
In the midst of all the fun, the author has woven an eco message that

Elementary choir students can expect to learn music through
listening, moving and begin the basic music reading and theory skills
encouraged by using Kodaly principles and Curwen hand signs. We will
focus on pitch matching, rhythm and tone production in a high energy,
high impact and fun environment. Elementary choir will have a concert
May 18th to demonstrate their new music skills for their families and
San Antonio community.
Youth Choir students can expect to learn complex rhythm, audiation
skills, sight-singing techniques, tone production and healthy vocal
habits while building a unique community of singers. We will use a
sequence of learning music that incorporates the Kodaly principles and
Curwen hand signs in a fast paced fun and safe environment. Students
in 9th-12th grades will have the opportunity to compete in the Texas
All-State process in the Fall of 2012; this is the perfect opportunity
to start building the necessary skills to do well. Students will
demonstrate their skills for their families and the San Antonio
community in a concert May 18th.
Hand chimes are open to mature 3rd graders and up. We will ring the
bells from the first day and gain knowledge in music reading as we
meet each week. Students will learn how to count in rhythm read notes
from the treble and bass clefs and create a community of dedicated
ringers. This group is unique in that it requires a high degree of
commitment to attend each week. Unlike choir, if a person should miss
rehearsal, their bell won’t have a “replacement” ringer. In addition,
each bell choir has a maximum of 15 ringers and a minimum of 8 ringers
to make. This is a unique opportunity in San Antonio as there are not
many (if any) community hand chime choirs. If there is enough demand,
an additional hour can be made to split into elementary and youth hand
chime choirs.
