Are you interested in joining a homeschool 4-H group? 4-H members
have fun developing leadership and life skills, learning by doing,
and serving our community. Just about anything you are interested
in can become a 4-H project. Our Encino 4-H Club projects have
included Aerospace, Foods and Nutrition, Public Speaking, Clothing
and Fashion Show, Entomology (insects), GIS (Geo Information
System), Health, Home and Housing, Horticulture, Robotics,
Photography, Bowling, and dozens of others. Some of the projects
have contest opportunities. Several of our graduating seniors over
the past years have earned scholarships through 4-H worth
thousands of dollars.
Members are 8 to 18 as of August 31, and we have some activities
for siblings aged 5 to 7. Our older members run the club meetings,
and many of our projects have teen leaders.
We meet the 2nd Wednesdays of the month at Mac Arthur Park Church
of God, 2938 Nacogdoches Rd, about a mile north of 410. We will
have a moms' meeting Wednesday, August 11, and the first club
meeting will be Wednesday, August 25. Contact Pat Knight at pkinsatx@gmail.com for more information.

school district for the same cost charged local students usually
between $10 and $13. All districts are supposed to make this
information easy to find, some do a better job than others. It's a
good idea to contact the district as early as possible so that they
make sure they have enough tests available. This is an easy and
inexpensive way for students to get a feel for the SAT.
World Water Monitoring Day™ (WWMD) is an international education
and outreach program that builds public awareness and involvement in
protecting water resources around the world by engaging citizens to
conduct basic monitoring of their local water bodies.
An
easy-to-use
test kit enables everyone from children to adults to sample local
water bodies for a core set of water quality parameters including
temperature, acidity (pH), clarity (turbidity) and dissolved oxygen
(DO). Results are shared with participating communities around the
globe through the WWMD Web site.
World Water Monitoring Day is
officially celebrated on September 18; however, the monitoring window
was extended for the first time in 2009 from March 22 (World
Water Day) until December 31. Participants are encouraged to
celebrate with WEF and IWA in September or to observe their own WWMD
anytime during the extended window. The deadline for submitting data
to the WWMD database is December 31. The coordinators of WWMD, the
Water Environment Federation (WEF)
and the International Water Association
(IWA) plan to expand participation to one million people in 100
countries by 2012.

Texas AgriLife Extension Service provides an opportunity for
children 8-13 in age to learn about gardening by growing their own
vegetables through the mentoring of Bexar County Master Gardener
volunteers. Each child is allotted a 3.5’x 28’ plot at the beautiful
San Antonio Botanical Garden. Children will have fun growing different
types of seeds, herbs, vegetables, and ornamental annual flowers.
Weekly educational gardening presentations will stimulate these young
minds. The children will also participate in fun, hands-on Junior
Master Gardener activities. In order to gain the most from the
learning experience and to help ensure successful growing,
participants are required to attend all sessions (two absences are
allowed). Families are welcome to share the gardening experience with
their child(ren); however, parents should remember that this is the
child’s plot and learning experience.

Saturday, June 19th at 10:00 a.m. The meeting will be at Boerne First
Baptist Church, Family Life Building. Please visit www.scatx.net for
more info. Come meet Mimi Enriquez, Principal and Liz Sweet, Dean of

by combining the traditional private classroom environment with
homeschooling. Classes are attended Tuesday and Thursday with optional
electives on Wednesday. This allows for more family time on alternate
days as parents guide their children through detailed lessons given by
the teacher to complete their student's education. This formula allows
for better character development as quality relationships between
parents and children are fostered.

skill that is essential for nearly every field of study and work, and
something that most of us are deathly afraid of! The goal of speech
camp is to give those who are afraid of public speaking a confidence
at the podium, and those who are already comfortable speaking in front
of others the tools they need to become more effective communicators.
We will be doing this through study of how to write and deliver an
effective speech, and many hands-on activities and practice. Students
will learn about three different types of speeches: Platform,
Interpretation, and Limited Preparation. Each speaking style is
different, and each provides a student with an arsenal of unique
skills they will use for years to come, whether in competitive speech,
or in life as a whole. July 19-23 Morning 9 am to 12

during their college career. There is a way, as parents, you can help

Lemonade Day is a nation-wide event that teaches kids the skills
they will need to be successful in business and in life! With
our user-friendly materials, kids learn to set goals, develop a
business plan, establish a budget, seek investors, provide customer
service, and give back to the community. Lemonade day is the
perfect opportunity for a community to show kids they care and train
the next generation of entrepreneurs through a fun, engaging,
experiential activity! When is it? Lemonade Day is
the first Sunday in May -- May 2nd, 2010. So, kids participating
across the country, including in San Antonio, will be setting up
stands on the same day! Many kids set up their stands in the morning
and sell lemonade until sundown. Who can participate?
Youth of all ages can participate (with adult supervision!). The great
thing about Lemonade Day is that the entire community can get
involved, from the kids selling lemonade to the adults helping them to
the customers buying and drinking the lemonade! How do
I register? To register for an official Lemonade Day stand and to
participate in the event, a parent or guardian must sign a consent
form agreeing that a responsible adult will assist and supervise. Register
Now. Do you need volunteers? Yes! There are many
ways you can get involved: Registering Kids Backpack Stuffing
Special Events Spreading the word about Lemonade Day Drinking
lots of fabulous lemonade! Contact
sara@lemonadeday.org to
learn more! Can I or my company donate? Yes, we need
investors to make this a success! If you'd like to support
Lemonade Day San Antonio please click DONATE above. If your
company is interested in sponsoring Lemonade Day San Antonio, we'd
love to have you as a partner! You're not only inspiring future
entrepreneurs, you're associating your brand with inspiring future
entrepreneurs, which is a fine thing! We can incorporate your
logo on backpacks and/or our web site, create volunteer opportunities
for your staff....the possibilities are endless! Contact
sara@lemonadeday.org. or
call 210-569-6927. How can my child's school get involved?
We encourage all public, private and parochial schools in
San Antonio and the surrounding areas to get involved. Schools and/or
teachers can "take this on" or simply share information with the
parents of their students. Ask a representative of your child's school
to contact sara@lemonadeday.org
or call 210-569-6927 to learn more. How and when do I get
my backpack? Kids who are registered will receive notification
about when and where to pick up their backpacks. If you registered,
then we have your email address and will be in touch soon!
What happens to the money my child makes on Lemonade Day? The
young entrepreneurs keep everything they earn - they've worked hard!
In the spirit of a true business, they are encouraged to open a
savings account, pay back investors and make a further investment in
their community by donating a portion of their profits to a charity of
their choice. So, how does this really work?
Materials: Each registered child will receive a “how to” Entrepreneur
Workbook with lessons on budgets, securing investors, choosing
locations, marketing, and customer service. We also provide a Caring
Adult Guide for the adult who will be working with the child. These
materials are very user-friendly and will be included in the backpack
you receive. Location: Site selection is an important
part of setting up any business! Kids choose their own sites and
are responsible for obtaining permission to sell lemonade on private
property. Please
click here for a list of San Antonio parks as possible lemonade
stand sites. Time: Kids, accompanied by responsible
adults, can set up their stands and open for business at any time
during Lemonade Day. Do what works best for you! Our suggestion is
from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Contest info: We will hold three
major contests as part of Lemonade Day: Best Tasting Lemonade, Best
Lemonade Stand, and Best Business. Upon registration you will receive
further details about entering the contests.
I invite all youth to enter the 11th Annual Bexar County 4-H Youth
Project show! Kids do not have to be in 4-H to participate! I have
been involved since its inception and have been chair for several
years now. It is similar to an old fashioned country fair. Kids may
enter baking, artwork, photography, sewing, woodworking, crafts,
gardening projects, poster design, needlework and quilting, metal
projects, and more! All participants receive ribbons. We award 1st
through 3rd place in three age categories as well as Best of Division
and Best of Show. The 2010 contest will be held May 15 at the Helotes
4-H Center across from O'Connor High School. The entry forms must be
postmarked by May 3rd. Questions? Please contact Jamie Miranda at
mypinkkoala@aol.com or 210-733-1757 for entry forms.
This is a support group for families primarily from the South West
side of San Antonio, but everyone is welcome. We all need a little
support, for parents and homeschoolers alike. We all strive to help
our kids learn with care and kindness. We also hope that by
homeschooling our children we can form a closer relationship with
them. We are the parents and the educators. That's a big
responsibility. That's why having a support system is so important.
This group is a place to discuss anything about homeschooling and to
meet others who school their own children, as well as a place to make
friends. It is a secular group and is open to anyone and everyone so
please be mindful of others beliefs and opinions.
We also have
park day at Miller's Pond Park every Monday from 10-12 a.m. We are new
so any input is welcome. Also, if you have any materials-books,
curriculum, etc., or even household stuff/clothes or whatever you can
think of that you don't use any more and you'd like to give them away,
bring them to our park day. It'd be a great way to share and exchange
materials. If you have anything you'd like to bring to our park day,
such as games for the children to play definitely feel free. It'd be
welcomed. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Its_our_CLASS/

The College Preparation Program provides opportunities for Texas
public school students and districts to take part in certain college
readiness assessments. Two components of the program are now available
for the 2009-2010 school year: student-selected testing at grade 11
and district-administered testing at grade 8.
Grade 11 Testing Program Students enrolled in 11th grade in a
local Texas public school district or charter school in the 2009-2010
school year will have the opportunity to select one college readiness
assessment at state expense. At this time, students may take a June
administration of either the ACT or the SAT, and the state will pay
the cost of their regular registration fees to the extent that funding
is available. Students who have already registered and paid for the
April or June ACT or the May or June SAT may be eligible to be
reimbursed by the applicable vendor.
Due to program funding restrictions, there is a limit on the total
number of registrations available. The TEA estimates that
approximately one-third of current 11th graders will be able to take
advantage of this program. Registration will be on a first-come,
first-served basis until all the available registrations have been
assigned.
Vouchers from the two testing companies (ACT, Inc. and the College
Board) will be sent to individual high schools. Students must obtain a
voucher from their guidance counselor or from the testing company in
order to register for a test. Students will use these vouchers to
register for one test of their choice to be administered in June 2010.
Students who have already registered and paid for an eligible
administration of the ACT or SAT may qualify for a refund. Eligible
test dates are ACT—April 10, 2010, and June 12, 2010, and SAT—May 1,
2010, and June 5, 2010.

including white-tailed deer, fox, coyote, raccoon, rabbit, waterfowl,

ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING Happens once a month, the first
Saturday of the month, 7:30 pm at Incarnate Word Univ next to
Central Market. The dances are partner dances done in a long line
of couples, as seen in the latest Pride and Prejudice movie. There
is no footwork or steps to learn, the couples dance figures that
move them up and down the line. It is a great activity for the
whole family. Suggested donation for adults is $2.00, and kids are
always free. From Broadway, enter the driveway across from Denny's
and follow the signs back to the Garden Room.
INTERNATIONAL DANCING Takes place every Friday at Lions
Field Rec Center, 2809 Broadway (at Mulberry) Yes it is a senior
center, but young people are invited for international dancing on
Fridays, 7:30 pm. These dances are easy and mostly line or circle
dances from countries like Romania, Greece, Israel, and France, among
others. The dances and music are traditional, we learned them from
dance teachers from the respective countries. So it's a great
opportunity to learn about other cultures, choose an activity that
provides some exercise, and suitable for the whole family, because
there's no smoking or alcohol here! Kids come free, and for adults
$2.00 suggested donation. Wear comfortable, sensible shoes, and casual
clothes.
The Home School group is open to all ages and grade levels. It
is recommended that children be able to swim at least one length
of a 25 yard pool to enroll. Instruction is designed to
accommodate a variety of swim abilities. The Wave Home School
program is geared toward helping Home Schoolers fulfill their PE
requirement, while becoming water safe, better swimmers and having
fun at the same time.
The group trains at the Alamo Heights High School (6900 Broadway)
on Monday, Wed. and Friday at 1:15 pm. Your children can attend any or
all of those 3 days that work best. Home School swimmers may compete
at the weekend meets, if desired. By participating in an early
afternoon practice, the evening hours belong to your family. Please
call Coach Susan, for try-out information: 210-488-1923.
