Did you know that the famed San Antonio Riverwalk serves a vital
flood control function for downtown San Antonio? How about that a
3-mile-long underground tunnel diverts San Antonio River flood waters
from the downtown area? Learn about these and other “Flash Flood
Alley” facts in a half-day field trip titled San Antonio’s Urban Flood
Management System.
The field trip begins at SARA’s headquarters with a presentation
and hands-on activities. Next, students are guided on a windshield
tour to Olmos Dam, the San Antonio River Tunnel inlet structure, the
Riverwalk’s Convent Park, the flood control tower at Nueces Street
Dam, and, if time permits, the tunnel outlet structure and the
Eagleland segment of the San Antonio River Improvements Project. Along
the way, students will learn not only how this infrastructure works
together as a system but also how its many beautification features
blend the components into the surrounding environment.
This field trip generally takes 3.5 hours. Schools must provide
their own transportation.
Two dates have been set aside to accommodate home-schooled
students:
- Friday, March 23, 2007: Sessions at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
- Thursday, April 19, 2007: Sessions at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

home-schooled student, call (210) 302-4247 or 866-345-7272 and ask for

CAMP needs high school, college age, and adult counselors to enable
children with special needs reach their maximum potential. Throughout
the summer of 2007, we will need approximately 400 counselor
volunteers ! Each individual session runs Sunday-Friday and overnight
stay is required. The most rewarding experience at CAMP will be the
friendships formed with fellow counselors and campers. Nothing
compares to the smiles our volunteers help place on the faces of our
children. Volunteers must be 14 years or older. Adults highly sought.
CAMP provides a thorough orientation and continuous training. Go to
www.campapps.org to fill out the
VOLUNTEER application.
ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING Happens once a month, the first
Saturday of the month, 7:30 pm at Incarnate Word Univ next to
Central Market. The dances are partner dances done in a long line
of couples, as seen in the latest Pride and Prejudice movie. There
is no footwork or steps to learn, the couples dance figures that
move them up and down the line. It is a great activity for the
whole family. Suggested donation for adults is $2.00, and kids are
always free. From Broadway, enter the driveway across from Denny's
and follow the signs back to the Garden Room.
INTERNATIONAL DANCING Takes place every Friday at Lions
Field Rec Center, 2809 Broadway (at Mulberry) Yes it is a senior
center, but young people are invited for international dancing on
Fridays, 7:30 pm. These dances are easy and mostly line or circle
dances from countries like Romania, Greece, Israel, and France, among
others. The dances and music are traditional, we learned them from
dance teachers from the respective countries. So it's a great
opportunity to learn about other cultures, choose an activity that
provides some exercise, and suitable for the whole family, because
there's no smoking or alcohol here! Kids come free, and for adults
$2.00 suggested donation. Wear comfortable, sensible shoes, and casual
clothes.
I have reserved shows at the planetarium for the following
days. San Antonio College also has an art display in the art
building and a geology display in the geology building. Parking is
easy and close to the planetarium. Please RSVP and plan to bring
the cash the day of the event.

The New Solar System
Synopsis: In recent years the pace of discovery in astronomy has
been breathtaking. Our understanding of the nine worlds circling
the Sun has undergone an amazing revolution. In this updated
program we will explore the latest discoveries made about each of
the planets, their moons and the ring systems they possess. We’ll
investigate comets, asteroids, as well as
highlight the search for possible new planets orbiting the Sun and
other stellar systems. From the formation of our star to the
frozen realm of the comets, find out what’s new under the Sun as
we feature, "The New Solar System".
Teacher's Note: "The New Solar System" examines the astronomical
interpretation of the Solar System's formation. It is an excellent
show for 4th grade and above.
Now in its 14th year, the 4th/5th Grade Talent Search is run by
the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP), a
non-profit educational organization committed to serving the
educational needs of academically talented youth. The purpose of
the talent search is to identify, recognize and motivate gifted
youth for continued or improved academic achievement during this
critical time in their development.
Through the home-based Talent Search, Duke TIP supports parents
in sending their gifted children the clear message that being
smart and working hard can, and should be, fun and rewarding.
Students will receive (mailed to their homes):
· Recognition for their achievement
· Newsletters with articles on many engaging topics
· Informative resource guides for gifted opportunities (for
parents and students)
· The option to participate in a writing contest (with cash
prizes!)
· The option for above level testing (EXPLORE)
How students qualify
Students in the equivalent of Fourth or Fifth Grade (public,
private or homeschool) may qualify to participate by scoring at or
above the 90th percentile on any subsection of a state
standardized test, taken within the past two years, or by having
an IQ of 120 or above. Several other tests and criteria may also
be used to qualify a student. Please go to
http://www.tip.duke.edu/talent_searches/grades_4-5/enrollment_criteria.html
for a full listing of qualification guidelines.
