San Antonio River Authority Field Trip

Did you know that the famed San Antonio Riverwalk serves a vital flood control function for downtown San Antonio? How about that a 3-mile-long underground tunnel diverts San Antonio River flood waters from the downtown area? Learn about these and other “Flash Flood Alley” facts in a half-day field trip titled San Antonio’s Urban Flood Management System.

The field trip begins at SARA’s headquarters with a presentation and hands-on activities. Next, students are guided on a windshield tour to Olmos Dam, the San Antonio River Tunnel inlet structure, the Riverwalk’s Convent Park, the flood control tower at Nueces Street Dam, and, if time permits, the tunnel outlet structure and the Eagleland segment of the San Antonio River Improvements Project. Along the way, students will learn not only how this infrastructure works together as a system but also how its many beautification features blend the components into the surrounding environment.

This field trip generally takes 3.5 hours. Schools must provide their own transportation.

Two dates have been set aside to accommodate home-schooled students:

  • Friday, March 23, 2007: Sessions at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, April 19, 2007: Sessions at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

To schedule your class field trip or to reserve a spot for your home-schooled student, call (210) 302-4247 or 866-345-7272 and ask for Community Relations.

On-Going Activities

Folk Dancing

ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING Happens once a month, the first Saturday of the month, 7:30 pm at Incarnate Word Univ next to Central Market. The dances are partner dances done in a long line of couples, as seen in the latest Pride and Prejudice movie. There is no footwork or steps to learn, the couples dance figures that move them up and down the line. It is a great activity for the whole family. Suggested donation for adults is $2.00, and kids are always free. From Broadway, enter the driveway across from Denny's and follow the signs back to the Garden Room.

INTERNATIONAL DANCING Takes place every Friday at Lions Field Rec Center, 2809 Broadway (at Mulberry) Yes it is a senior center, but young people are invited for international dancing on Fridays, 7:30 pm. These dances are easy and mostly line or circle dances from countries like Romania, Greece, Israel, and France, among others. The dances and music are traditional, we learned them from dance teachers from the respective countries. So it's a great opportunity to learn about other cultures, choose an activity that provides some exercise, and suitable for the whole family, because there's no smoking or alcohol here! Kids come free, and for adults $2.00 suggested donation. Wear comfortable, sensible shoes, and casual clothes.

Homeschool Swim Team

The group trains at the Alamo Heights High School (6900 Broadway), Monday thru Friday at 1:00 pm. The AHHS Natatorium is a clean and spacious indoor facility. Home School swimmers may compete on the weekends with the Wave team, if desired. By offering an early afternoon practice, the evening hours belong to your family. Summer Art Camp

Summer Art Camp offers one- and two-week long classes concentrating on a specific media or subject and providing creative learning experiences in a positive, nurturing and fun environment.

Because Summer Art Camp offers individualized instruction, enrollment is limited to 10 students per class unless otherwise noted. All classes are taught by a professional artist who will help inspire and develop individual expression.

AGE RANGE Summer Art Camp classes are open to ages 5 – teens. Classes are designed to fit the skill set for a specific age range. Age ranges are based on this and not on the artistic ability of the child. No exceptions are made.

Because we’re committed to a high-quality educational experience for all the young artists at Summer Art Camp, our youngest artists — 5- and 6-year-olds —may enroll for half-day only. Teen classes are geared to ages 13 – 16, however older students may register.

LOCATION Classes offered, unless otherwise noted, are held on the park-like grounds of the Southwest School of Art & Craft (SSAC), Ursuline Campus (across from the Central Library).

Visit Southwest School of Art And Craft website for more information.

Seguin Outdoor Learning Center Camps

Students are already dreaming about the end of school and making plans for the summer, and we have summer camp programs sure to bring big smiles. Our camp programs feature fun activities that teach outdoor skills, foster an appreciation for nature, forge friendships, and encourage self-discovery.

TEEN EXPEDITION CAMP Join us on a 4-day expedition to the trails, cliffs, and caves of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. This trip will be full of adventure activities: Professionally guided rock climbing instruction, back packing, primitive camping, geocaching, and more. We will also take time to explore the natural wonders and beauty of the park. We plan to practice outdoor photography, gaze at the stars, and even enjoy a night hike at full moon as some of our adventures.

STEPPING STONES CAMP Step into a week of discovery and fun at SOLC. This half-day format is perfect for the young explorers who enjoy the outdoors. We'll participate in exciting activities that encourage creativity and learning: science & nature exploration, group games, teambuilding activities, fishing, hiking, arts & crafts and more. Stepping Stones Camp was our most popular camp last year, so for 2007 we've added an additional week. We'd like you to join us this year. Sign up early!

ADVENTURE CAMPS These programs are especially for older youth seeking adventure and camaraderie. The full-day format gives us more time to spend doing advanced activities including: archery, canoeing, high ropes challenges, and even a team survivor challenge. We will also offer other fun activities such as: fishing, hiking, and group games. In addition to having lots of fun, you will grow stronger as a person and build essential teamwork skills.

REGISTER EARLY FOR CAMP

Our summer programs are led by experienced, professional staff and qualified instructors who are trained to provide a safe, fun, and rewarding experience. Space is limited in each session, so sign up early. Visit website for more information.
