2008 January
This group is for those living on or near Lackland Air Force Base that
have decided to homeschool. There is no statement of faith and all are
welcome. This is a very new group so I have scheduled a park day on
Thursdays at 1 p.m. at Lion Park on Lackland. We ask that you join the
yahoo group before attending park days. This park day will repeat
every week unless members decide on a different day. Hope to meet some
homeschoolers at the park soon!
GEAR is Getting Excited About Robotics. It is 6 weeks of intense fun
for kindergarten through 8th grade. HERO has two teams this year. We
provide the LEGO kits to the teams.
If you are interested in participating this year please let me know.
If you want details on what GEAR is www.sabest.org and at the bottom
on the left is the link. We have two teams that is all they would
allow me to register at this time. Kick off is when we find out what
the mission is Feb 3rd from 3-4pm
Competition day March 15th 10am -4pm
Everything happens at the UTSA 1604 campus.

This is a very nice lady from our church that is looking to begin high
school level computer classes for the homeschool community. This is a
very important opportunity personally for our family and we are very
excited. I hope that many fellow homeschoolers will be interested and
let her know so that she can be able to plan if there is enough
interest. If you know of a location (even your home) that classes
could be held please let her know that also as she is looking for a
location to begin in the fall. As I understand it, classes would be
kept fairly small. She supplies all the laptop computers, just is in
need of space.

Spring sports offer opportunities for athletes from fall and winter
sports to stay in condition and improve their strength. The following
is some excellent advice for sports teams on staying in shape that
would be beneficial to all home school athletes.
Coach Ham and Coach Harris had the opportunity to attend a football
clinic last Saturday. During that clinic, they were presented some
beneficial information for all of us - including some good information
about strength and conditioning. We have always been strong supporters
of having players stay in shape, but the recent research shows that
just lifting weights and jogging is not good enough. The best football
teams in the state, as well as college teams, are now encouraging
their players to participate in different sports outside of football.
Many are currently participating in basketball leagues, which is
excellent. Beyond basketball, however, only a few plan to participate
in a sport this spring. FEAST would like to suggest that, if you are
not planning to participate in a spring sport, you may want to rethink
this decision. Consider joining the baseball team or the track and
field team. Baseball is great for building strength and track and
field is an excellent way to stay in shape, learn discipline, and to
participate as an individual athlete. Many high schools now require
that their football and basketball players participate in track and
field. For some such as Coach Harris, FEAST Football Coach, this led
to a very successful career as a runner - which would have never
happened if he hadn't tried it. He and others have also found that
they became much better athletes and football players after
participating in other sports such as track and field.
Coach Alex Garza is actively looking for baseball players for this
season. Coach Garza has extensive experience coaching baseball and we
are anticipating that this team will do very well this season. If you
are interested in playing baseball, you can contact Coach Garza at
210-643-9837 for more information. No experience is necessary for this
team, but Coach Garza will expect players to improve their skills -
just like we expect in all other FEAST Sports.
If you're not able to participate in another organized sport, and
you plan on "moving up" to the high school level in the FEAST Sports
Program, then we would strongly encourage you to start exercising NOW.
Keep it up until your favorite sport starts up again.
If you have any questions on how to get involved with sports,
please check the FEAST website for instruction. Also listed on the
website are the phone numbers for the coaches of the various FEAST
Sports. www.homeschoolfeast.com
I
wanted to invite everyone to a free concert on Tuesday Jan. 29 at
McAllister Auditorium from 7:30-8:30pm. It is a song cycle of about 20
songs depicting the animals on the ark and what their prayers were to
God as they sailed. It's definitely a family event. It's classical,
but "soft-cell" and very entertaining. I am part-time faculty there
and I sing the soprano songs, in addition to a wonderful tenor and
baritone singing the other songs. The stage will be decorated with
large stuffed animals and a power point of each animal as we sing. I
have a poster/invitation I can forward to anyone who
wants to print it out as reminder, just contact me. Hope you can come
and enjoy!

Those of you who do not know me; I am a homeschooling mom in San
Antonio and I am also a local choreographer with a contemporary dance
company, SpareWorks. I am looking for military families to share
stories or other writings for an upcoming project, Oct 2008. I was
recently awarded a project grant from the San Antonio Artist
Foundation to pursue a project based on the daily lives of military
families and military personnel. After talking with my brother who is
ex-military and now works for the government in a capacity which takes
him overseas for long stretches at a time, I came upon the desire to
make a dance about his wife and what she has to do mentally and
emotionally to cope with the cycle of his absence and return. When I
received the award from the Artist Foundation, this idea for one dance
became an idea for a complete concert.
The goal of this dance concert is not political. I will collect
stories, thoughts, feelings, poetry, etc... from military families of
any age, as well as from soldiers and those who work closely in the
current war situation.

NASA Quest Challenges are Web-based, interactive explorations
designed to engage students in authentic scientific and engineering
processes. The solutions relate to issues encountered daily by NASA
personnel.
The content of NASA Quest Challenges follows real NASA tasks with
the goal of involving young people in developing tomorrow's solutions,
while inspiring them towards careers in science and engineering. As
students work in teams to mirror NASA career roles, agency experts are
available to answer questions and to encourage a proper design
process. The interaction with scientists occurs via Q&A, chats,
interactive Webcasts, and posted feedback on the Web site.
Cratering the Moon Challenge
http://quest.nasa.gov/challenges/lcross
Welcome to the Spring 2008 NASA Quest Challenge!
Help scientists at NASA find water on the lunar poles.
Just like on Earth, water is a crucial resource on the Moon. It
would be expensive to transport to the Moon the amount of water needed
for human consumption and exploration during extended stays on the
Moon. Therefore, it is important to find out if natural resources,
such as water, exist on the Moon since that could save us the cost of
transporting these materials through space. The Lunar Crater
Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) mission is planning to
search for water ice at the South Pole of the Moon, leveraging the
information we learned from the Clementine and Lunar Prospector
missions. Finding deposits of water ice would be a crucial step in
deciding where to locate our human outpost on the Moon.
Your challenge will be to design a lunar impact simulator and
determine the optimal impact angle to give us the most information
from the impact.
Registration for this Challenge begins in February 2008, but you
can begin preparing for the Challenge now with some background
references at
http://quest.nasa.gov/challenges/lcross/about.html A Teachers'
Guide will be available in MS Word and .pdf formats.
To browse additional information about this mission and read news
as it breaks, visit the main LCROSS site at

Welcome to the First LIMA Quest Challenge! Become a scientist and
propose Antarctic Research _ The Landsat Image Mosaic of Antarctica
(LIMA) is the first-ever true-color high-resolution satellite view of
the Antarctic continent enabling everyone to see Antarctica as it
appears in real life.
This new view of Antarctica will revolutionize Antarctica research.
The LIMA web site
http://lima.nasa.gov/ is designed as part of the International
Polar Year http://www.us-ipy.gov/
to familiarize people with Antarctica, to explore the richness of its
features, to learn about why Antarctica matters to us all, and to
explain and demonstrate how scientists use satellite imagery to study
the continent.
During this challenge, you will become the scientists who study the
features on Antarctica, as never seen before; and, using a major
scientific tool: curiosity, you will develop a research question and
argue the value of studying a feature based on this new view of
Antarctica. See the growing list of background sources.

by Dec 1 to participate in the event. We will be having an
information session on October
30th at 1:00 pm at the Thousand Oaks Library. We will schedule
additional information sessions if requested. However, you do not have to
attend the session to participate in the event.
Please take some time to explore the
National History Day website (NHD.org). This terrific site
describes the National History Day program, and is filled with
detailed information to help your student produce a high quality
History Day project.
SA-HERO is putting together a National
History Day orientation program, field trips to various university
libraries, and other “how-to” events.
National History Day is a year long
program for middle and high school students. The fall months are
spent doing research. In early January, students spend time
creating websites, documentaries, 1 act skits, museum displays, and
writing research papers. SA-HERO will schedule our event,
probably sometime during the last week of January or the first week of
February-depending on the availability of space and judges.
The regional event will be held
February 29 (preliminaries) and March 1st for finals.
SA-HERO will be sending 1st and 2nd place
winners from each category to the regional competition. 1st
and 2nd place winners in each contest will be awarded the
opportunity to compete at the state competition in
Austin on May 3-4. The National competition will be
held at the
University of
Maryland at
College Park June 15-19.
If you would like to receive more
information on our National History Day program please contact us at historyFair@sahero.org.
Southside Lions Recreation Center of San Antonio is interested in
hosting recreational sports leagues for area homeschoolers. The
current sport is Volleyball and we can form teams as small as three to
a team. The leagues are for ages 6 to adult. The facilities are
available Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. There is
a possibility of "open" volleyball as well. The center has other
programs it can make available to homeschoolers including a nutrition
program.
In order to form the leagues, we have to know by the first week in
November how many are interested in participating and their ages. The
cost will be $5 per child, $10 per adult for the entire season. The
Southside Lions center is near the Southside Lions Park on Pecan
Valley between I-37 and I-10.
This is a great opportunity for homeschoolers to develop a low
cost, daytime athletic program. The center hosts other sports such as
basketball during the year. We need as many homeschoolers as possible
to participate to demonstrate our commitment to the program. We also
could use some help organizing the effort. If you are interested in
participating, please contact us at mKretzschmar@sahero.org as soon as
possible.
If there is enough interest, SA-HERO will arrange for local college
campus visits. Scheduling campus visits as a group allows us to
arrange to sit in on classes and have admission and financial aid
information oriented to homeschoolers. The goal of the visits is for
students (8th grade and up) to start familiarizing themselves with the
college application process and deciding what factors are important to
them in selecting a college. The visits will probably be on Mondays or
Tuesdays. The first visit will be to Our Lady of the Lake University.
Other visits will include UTSA, Trinity, Incarnate Word, and St.
Mary's. Please send an email to mKretzschmar@sahero.org if you are
interested and be sure to note which days of the week work best for
you.
The class will be a martial arts/fitness class. Fitness and Fun
will be the main focus. The children will be learning how to kick,
punch, and play fun games. It will be good for exercise and give
parents an hour to get an errand or two done. Parents are welcome to
stay and observe in our parent's room. Age range is from 7-12 but if
child is less than 7 yrs old it depends on the child's ability to keep
up with the rest of the class. Children younger than the age of 7 tend
to have a shorter attention span. I'm willing to try with younger than
7years old. Children older than 12 years old would probably get bored,
but the same as the little ones, I can work with them also. I'll try
to make it where no one gets left out. Younger than four is pushing
it.

ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING Happens once a month, the first
Saturday of the month, 7:30 pm at Incarnate Word Univ next to
Central Market. The dances are partner dances done in a long line
of couples, as seen in the latest Pride and Prejudice movie. There
is no footwork or steps to learn, the couples dance figures that
move them up and down the line. It is a great activity for the
whole family. Suggested donation for adults is $2.00, and kids are
always free. From Broadway, enter the driveway across from Denny's

INTERNATIONAL DANCING Takes place every Friday at Lions
Field Rec Center, 2809 Broadway (at Mulberry) Yes it is a senior
center, but young people are invited for international dancing on
Fridays, 7:30 pm. These dances are easy and mostly line or circle
dances from countries like Romania, Greece, Israel, and France, among
others. The dances and music are traditional, we learned them from
dance teachers from the respective countries. So it's a great
opportunity to learn about other cultures, choose an activity that
provides some exercise, and suitable for the whole family, because
there's no smoking or alcohol here! Kids come free, and for adults
$2.00 suggested donation. Wear comfortable, sensible shoes, and casual
clothes.
The Home School group is open to all ages and grade levels. It
is recommended that children be able to swim at least one length
of a 25 yard pool to enroll. Instruction is designed to
accommodate a variety of swim abilities. The Wave Home School
program is geared toward helping Home Schoolers fulfill their PE
requirement, while becoming water safe, better swimmers and having
fun at the same time.
The group trains at the Alamo Heights High School (6900 Broadway)
on Monday, Wed. and Friday at 1:15 pm. Your children can attend any or
all of those 3 days that work best. Home School swimmers may compete
at the weekend meets, if desired. By participating in an early
afternoon practice, the evening hours belong to your family. Please
call Coach Susan, for try-out information: 210-488-1923.
