Anne Frank - A History for Today: A Lesson for Tomorrow

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”  -Anne Frank
Anne Frank - A History for Today: A Lesson for Tomorrow
Presented by the Barshop Jewish Community Center
In Collaboration with the Holocaust Memorial of San Antonio and the Jewish Federation of San Antonio
Feb. 1-Feb. 27, 2009

More than 65 years ago, a young girl was forced into hiding.  She saw a government try to obliterate her family, her neighborhood, and her people.  Now, for the first time in San Antonio, this exhibit will take you on a journey into the past.  Anne Frank: A History for Today will take you through the pages of her personal diary, interwoven with historical facts and photographs.

Anne Frank: A History for Today juxtaposes photographs of the Frank family with those of historical events of the time and shows how persecuted people such as the Franks were affected by political decisions and by the actions of individuals.

Anne Frank: A History for Today was developed by the Anne Frank House and is sponsored in North America by the Anne Frank Center, USA (New York City).  A wide array of programming will accompany the exhibit during its stay in San Antonio.

A special 90-minute program, including a guided tour of the Anne Frank exhibit, the Holocaust Memorial Museum and a guest presentation, is offered to groups and schools. This program must be reserved in advance. For more information, contact Rachel Rustin at (210) 302-6951.

The Anne Frank committee is looking for volunteers to assist with giving tours and many other facets of the exhibit.
The Barshop JCC is located at 12500 N.W. Military Hwy. @ Wurzbach Pkwy., 78231.  For directions, call the JCC at (210) 302-6820.  Additional information about the exhibit is available here.

Magik Theatre Acting & Creativity Academy

We always dream big at the Magik Theatre, especially when it comes to arts education for young people.  It has always been our dream to turn our Academy into a conservatory, a place where children of all ages could come, be trained by our professional staff, and learn every aspect of theatre. This year our Academy will begin to take steps to make that happen. We’re offering a full schedule of classes which will start with young actors and actresses to be and include people of all ages.  Our goal is to give our students the tools to be creative adults who know how to think out of the box and come up with innovative solutions whatever work they do, be it in the arts, business, science, computers, or any other field of work they choose to follow.  We hope that within a year or two that we will have a second space with classrooms and a theatre which will used to produce plays by our students and present other young performing groups from theatres all over the country.  Imagine that - a theatre under the leadership of professional artists, run by young people, expressing their ideas, hopes, fears, and dreams, fueled by classrooms and studios where students study the creative process acting, voice, dance, film, puppetry, set design, construction, and painting, lighting, and any other theatrical skills they need.

The Academy will be taught by our Professional staff all of whom know how to teach and how to play. If you’re looking for an affordable, quality arts education for your child, call and register now.  The Magik Theatre is a working professional theatre where young people of all ages can dream and create together with new friends that they meet at The Magik Academy. - Richard Rosen/Executive Director

Classes are offered Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

National Geography Bee-Free!

The SA-HERO Geo Bee is much lower stress than a traditional spelling bee. All the contestants will be sitting around a table. There are six rounds where everyone answers a question. The contestants do not have to stand up to answer the question and there is no leaving the stage if they get them wrong. Half the questions are some form of multiple choice! If your child might be interested in competing, this is the time to try it!

HERO will be holding its annual Geo Bee on Tuesday, January 13, 1:30 pm at the Semmes Branch library. There is no fee to compete! The competition is open to students in grades four through eight who are not over the age of 15 by the time of the national level. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. On-Going Activities

Folk Dancing

ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING Happens once a month, the first Saturday of the month, 7:30 pm at Incarnate Word Univ next to Central Market. The dances are partner dances done in a long line of couples, as seen in the latest Pride and Prejudice movie. There is no footwork or steps to learn, the couples dance figures that move them up and down the line. It is a great activity for the whole family. Suggested donation for adults is $2.00, and kids are always free. From Broadway, enter the driveway across from Denny's and follow the signs back to the Garden Room.

INTERNATIONAL DANCING Takes place every Friday at Lions Field Rec Center, 2809 Broadway (at Mulberry) Yes it is a senior center, but young people are invited for international dancing on Fridays, 7:30 pm. These dances are easy and mostly line or circle dances from countries like Romania, Greece, Israel, and France, among others. The dances and music are traditional, we learned them from dance teachers from the respective countries. So it's a great opportunity to learn about other cultures, choose an activity that provides some exercise, and suitable for the whole family, because there's no smoking or alcohol here! Kids come free, and for adults $2.00 suggested donation. Wear comfortable, sensible shoes, and casual clothes.

Homeschool Swim Team

The Home School group is open to all ages and grade levels. It is recommended that children be able to swim at least one length of a 25 yard pool to enroll. Instruction is designed to accommodate a variety of swim abilities. The Wave Home School program is geared toward helping Home Schoolers fulfill their PE requirement, while becoming water safe, better swimmers and having fun at the same time.

The group trains at the Alamo Heights High School (6900 Broadway) on Monday, Wed. and Friday at 1:15 pm. Your children can attend any or all of those 3 days that work best. Home School swimmers may compete at the weekend meets, if desired. By participating in an early afternoon practice, the evening hours belong to your family. Please call Coach Susan, for try-out information: 210-488-1923.
