A wonderful new opportunity has become available for High School
home schooled groups interested in robotics competitions!
FIRST in Texas has been awarded grant money from the Texas Workforce
Commission to start new FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of
Science and Technology) robotics teams around the state. The grant has
especially targeted home school groups. FIRST programs not
only helps students in the areas of technology, math and science but
they encourage team work, build self confidence and develop other core
skills valued in institutions of higher learning and in the workforce.
Please read the attached document (follows) for details and
give me a call if you may have a suggested group interested in
starting a new robotics team. I hope to hear from you soon!
Kind regards, Erin Hagan FIRST in Texas P

The Foundation for Inspiration & Recognition of Science and
Technology in Texas (FIRST in Texas) is excited to share the news with
you that the Texas Workforce Commission awarded FIRST in Texas a grant
award to support 230 new FIRST robotic teams across Texas in public
high schools, home school organizations, private schools, and schools
associated with our 17 military bases here in Texas. This is a great
opportunity to involve your high school students in a proven‐ hands on
competition that involves science, technology, engineering and
mathematics.
Grant funds have been set aside for kit and
registration costs for schools to start a new FIRST Tech Challenge
(FTC) team or a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team. Both the FRC
and the FTC have proven to motivate participants to pursue higher
education, especially in the areas of engineering and technology.
Participants learn advanced programming and technology concepts as
well as crucial life skills such as self confidence and teamwork.
Hopefully you will consider taking advantage of the funding that is
available to new teams and have a significant impact on your school.
The FTC and FRC programs are two upper‐level competitions for 9th
through 12th grade students that provide participants with a challenge
and the opportunity to solve the challenge working alongside
professional mentors including engineers, technologists, and
scientists. At competitions, various awards recognize student teams at
all levels and scholarships are available to help students further
their education. Cost to compete is a major difference between an
FTC and FRC team. This may be a deciding factor in which team is most
appropriate for your school. FTC teams average 10 students per team
and costs total around $1,500*. FRC teams average 25 students and
costs total around $6,500* and runs on a larger scale model. Visit
www.usfirst.org to further understand the differences between these
two competitions to see which is the best fit for your school.
When
you consider the results, FIRST’s impact is extraordinary. According
to a study conducted by Brandeis University, 98% of students who
participate in FIRST programs graduate high school, 88% of FRC alumni
continue onto college, 86% of FRC alumni report an increased interest
in science and technology, 70% of FRC alumni report an increased
motivation to do well in school. Young women who participate in FIRST
are four times more likely to pursue science and engineering in
college and minority members of FIRST teams are more than twice as
likely to enter the fields of science and engineering.
To register
for a new team, please visit the FIRST website at www.usfirst.org. For
more information on how to apply for grant funding to get your new FRC
or FTC up and running, visit www.firstintexas.org and submit the
application available on the home page. Thank you for your support. We
look forward to your participation in FIRST! *Costs include kit and
registration, but do not include other costs such as travel and extra
supplies.

Greetings from the Zoo! We have some exciting things happening
around here that I would like to pass on to you. We will be
hosting our first "Math Days" at the Zoo in November! It is a
self-directed program where the teachers and students will be sent
curriculum via e-mail that they download and print before they arrive
at the Zoo. At the Zoo, they will travel to various stations that are
marked on a map and complete their worksheets. Because it is aimed for
grades 2 through 4 this year, they are free to complete as many
questions as they want, and to visit as many or as few stations as
they can in their allotted field trip time.
Sample
questions could be something like: Our male hippo, "Tumbo,"
recently weighed in at 5,800 pounds. Our female hippo, "Uma," weighed
in at 5,300 pounds. How much larger is "Tumbo" than "Uma"? (For older
kids: convert pounds to kilograms.) Together they eat 150 pounds of
hay a day. How much do they eat in one week? Andean Condors
can have wingspans up to 10 feet from wingtip to wingtip. Is your
wingspan less than or greater than the condor's wingspan?
Visit our American flamingos at the front of the Zoo. Many flamingos
stand on only one leg to rest and to conserve heat. Is the angle
formed by the flamingo's leg an acute, obtuse or right angle?
Please feel free to pass on this news and my information to your
PTA/PTO leaders and math specialists. As this program is only going to
be held November 2nd through 5th of this year, the curriculum will not
be made available any other time of year. Now is the time to book
those field trips before it gets too cold or too hot and too crowded!
There is no extra cost associated with Math Days. It is still the $7
school group rate. Please feel free to contact me if you have
any questions and thanks for all you do! Lana Reynolds

Learn more and help make your students aware of the substantial
contributions that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology
is making in their communities every day during the 11th Annual
Worldwide GIS Day. GIS Day is a global event where thousands of
users of GIS technology open their doors to schools, businesses, and
the general public to showcase real world applications of this
existing technology.
San Antonio GIS Day 2010 will take place on Friday, November 19th
2010 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at La Villita Assembly Hall
During GIS Day 2010, users of GIS will display exhibits/posters,
give demonstrations, and lectures, and host a variety of events
that will allow participants to see and experience firsthand GIS
technology and its extensive applications and benefits.
Overview: Geographic Information Systems (or GIS) is software
that is used as an analysis tool that is useful in many areas of study
and research. It is also a mapping database that displays graphics and
related attribute data and it is used to solve problems for any
location (spatial) based data. GIS is also used in science, geography,
social studies, and technology programs and it is specifically
included in the World Geography TEKS 113.34.21.E (Texas Essential
Knowledge and Skills). One of the goals of GIS Day 2010 is to help
students meet the TEKS related to GIS.
Several agencies, organizations, and private companies from the San
Antonio area will showcase their GIS applications and provide
training and teaching assistance. The GIS presenters/exhibitors
will include the City of San Antonio’s Planning/Development
Services Department, and the Police & Fire Departments, San Antonio
Water System (SAWS), CPS Energy, San Antonio River Authority
(SARA), UTSA, San Marcos Texas State University, Halff &
Associates, Pape-Dawson Engineers, and many others. This is a
wonderful opportunity for students to experience and see successful
careers in GIS and real world applications of GIS in their
community in a variety of fields. The school track is focused on
classes that are already using GIS or about to use GIS in the
social sciences, sciences, and technology. Students are expected to be
mature and interested. Teachers should expect to make connections
with possible mentors, as well as local GIS data. The audience will
be a mix of professionals, GIS Technicians and students. A host
college student will guide each class as students.

Carol Pavliska is organizing HERO's Odyssey of the Mind teams.
If you are interested in participating, please let her know ASAP. She
will be holding an informational session in Wilson County and am happy
to do one in San Antonio if there are interested families.
Odyssey of the Mind is a creative (and competitive) problem-solving
program for kids in grades K-12. Teams are comprised of 5-7
students and 1-2 coaches. The program runs the length of the
school year and culminates in a regional tournament, usually held in
the Austin or Waco areas, and a state tournament in Houston. This is
our family's 6th year to participate in Odyssey of the Mind through
HERO's sponsorship. It is a fantastic program that encourages
creativity and out of the box thinking. Participation requires
committment, but in our experience it has been well worth it.

National History Day (NHD) is open to students in sixth
grade and above. Students prepare a project on the annual theme which
this year is “Debate & Diplomacy: Successes, Failures, Consequences.”
The great thing about NHD is the flexibility in the ways you can
compete. Your submission can be a paper, exhibit, documentary,
website, or performance. Students can enter as individuals or as a
group of up to five students except for the paper category. My
son has been competing in NHD for the last three years and I can tell
you homeschoolers are welcomed.
Visit www.nhd.org for more
information on possible topics and competition rules. You can email me
any questions you have about the competition. If there is enough
interest, I will hold a general information session or if you have a
homeschool group, I will come and discuss the competition. Please
email at

The Trust in Learning 2011 Conference is about how to be a
homeschooling family. Instead of talking about different homeschooling
methods, our speakers will give you insight and tools to help your
family have the conversations that will guide you to the right
educational choices for your family.
Our goal is to inspire
stronger relationships, a greater clarity of purpose, a deeper trust
in our choices, and ultimately the ability to enjoy life together
more. Our speakers are Mary Hood of Association of Relaxed

NPLD is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve
and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. In 2009, 150,000
volunteers built trails and bridges, removed trash and invasive
plants, planted trees and restored our water resources. Join us for
the next NPLD on September 25, 2010.
Thousands of volunteers in every state will put their hands to work
on Saturday, September 25, 2010 in a coast-to-coast effort to improve
and enhance our treasured lands. From Plymouth Rock to the Golden
Gate, the Tallgrass Prairie, the Rockies, the Rio
Grande—volunteers will join in this national day of caring for their
lands.
Volunteers build bridges and trails, improve habitat for
wildlife, plant trees, remove invasive plants that threaten fragile
natives, protect natural, historic and cultural resources—and much
more. Volunteers work in parks and forests, at rivers, lakes, and
wetlands, at cultural and historic sites and in their own
neighborhoods.

Do you like to look at, listen to and learn about birds? Are you

your birding and leadership skills along with others your age by

September 11 session to be eligible to attend the October and November

We are a high school varsity level baseball program that believes
that homeschools should enjoy the benefits for playing baseball at a
competitive level. We also believe that homeschool players should have
the same exposure the college and professional opportunities as
public/private school students. As such we strive to create a
competitive baseball program that is on par with other public/private
schools.
For High School level players we are looking for: Homeschool
students interested in playing high school varsity baseball that are
between the ages of 13 and 19 as of Sept 1 of the school year the
player will be playing. Players must be certified by parents as 8th
grade or older (8th graders may get 5 yrs. of high school eligibility)
and in good academic standing.
We will have a team meeting for parents and players and start our
fall workouts on September 14th at 5:00pm at Bain Field. Visit
http://www.sahomeschoolbaseball.org/ for more information.
Kick off your homeschool year with a San Antonio Homeschool
Connections (SAHC) get-together on September 8 @ 10:00. We are an
inclusive group, welcoming all types of homeschooling families in San
Antonio and its surrounding areas. We offer support and resources to
both new and seasoned homeschooling families, and provide
opportunities for our parents and children to connect and form
long-lasting friendships. Normally we meet at the park on
Wednesdays, however we have chosen Chuck E Cheese as the venue for
this event. At this meeting, we will be welcoming new members and
discussing what everyone would like to see on the calendar this year.
We have a fairly large group coming already, but there is always room
for more! If you would like to attend, please join SAHC @
http://www.meetup.com/San-Antonio-Homeschoolers/ and RSVP for this
event. Or, if you’d like to see if this group is for you before
joining, please email Pamela Moskwa @
pamoramagrace@hotmail.com,
and I’ll add you and your children to the guest list and provide you
with additional information.
The Homeschool Academic and Arts Class Day (HAAC Day) serves to
connect tutors with homeschool families who wish to delegate one or
more subjects to the tutor(s) and, secondarily, to provide an avenue
for fellowship and support for the students and their families. Our
once a week Wednesday classes are held in the education building of
the First Baptist Church of Bulverde which is located at the corner of
the west side of Hwy 281 and the east end of Casey Road and is just
over 11 miles north of Loop 1604. To help you know if HAAC Day is a
good fit for your family, I'll share a few of our policies.
We
have a completely open campus and parents and siblings are welcome to
stay "quietly" on campus. We do also have access to a playground where
younger siblings are welcome to play under their parent’s supervision.
We accept students anytime throughout the year as long as they can
enter a classroom in sync with the rest of the class, for example, on
the same chapter of the class book as the class is. And we do accept
students who are new to homeschooling provided they can find a sponsor
from our homeschooling community who is known to us who will give them
a recommendation as being a good fit for our campus. Students are told
that all adults on campus, student council members and students older
than themselves have the authority to correct any misbehavior,
providing, of course, that such corrections are Godly.
We
offer a full slate of classes for 6th through 12th grades. Classes
will be geared toward a specific traditional grade level, but a
student may receive permission from the tutor to take a class that is
geared toward older students. Such students must be ready for the
class both academically and emotionally as one does not assure the
other.
For more information about our class day, please visit
our web site: www.haaclassday.org.
Train in our 20,000 square foot facility with degreed coaches. Each
class will address strength, balance, fitness, coordination, body
awareness, and FUN! Mondays and Fridays 1pm-2pm. Only $12.50 per
session. FREE CLASSES UNTIL September 17TH! Call 210.40.3739 for more

Are you interested in joining a homeschool 4-H group? 4-H members
have fun developing leadership and life skills, learning by doing,
and serving our community. Just about anything you are interested
in can become a 4-H project. Our Encino 4-H Club projects have
included Aerospace, Foods and Nutrition, Public Speaking, Clothing
and Fashion Show, Entomology (insects), GIS (Geo Information
System), Health, Home and Housing, Horticulture, Robotics,
Photography, Bowling, and dozens of others. Some of the projects
have contest opportunities. Several of our graduating seniors over
the past years have earned scholarships through 4-H worth
thousands of dollars.
Members are 8 to 18 as of August 31, and we have some activities
for siblings aged 5 to 7. Our older members run the club meetings,
and many of our projects have teen leaders.
We meet the 2nd Wednesdays of the month at Mac Arthur Park Church
of God, 2938 Nacogdoches Rd, about a mile north of 410. We will
have a moms' meeting Wednesday, August 11, and the first club
meeting will be Wednesday, August 25. Contact Pat Knight at pkinsatx@gmail.com for more information.

Sophmores and Juniors can register to take the PSAT at the local
school district for the same cost charged local students usually
between $10 and $13. All districts are supposed to make this
information easy to find, some do a better job than others. It's a
good idea to contact the district as early as possible so that they
make sure they have enough tests available. This is an easy and
inexpensive way for students to get a feel for the SAT.

easy-to-use
test kit enables everyone from children to adults to sample local
water bodies for a core set of water quality parameters including
temperature, acidity (pH), clarity (turbidity) and dissolved oxygen
(DO). Results are shared with participating communities around the
globe through the WWMD Web site.
World Water Monitoring Day is
officially celebrated on September 18; however, the monitoring window
was extended for the first time in 2009 from March 22 (World
Water Day) until December 31. Participants are encouraged to
celebrate with WEF and IWA in September or to observe their own WWMD
anytime during the extended window. The deadline for submitting data
to the WWMD database is December 31. The coordinators of WWMD, the
Water Environment Federation (WEF)
and the International Water Association
(IWA) plan to expand participation to one million people in 100
countries by 2012.

children, ages 3 to 10, to educate, enrich and entertain, so

Texas AgriLife Extension Service provides an opportunity for
children 8-13 in age to learn about gardening by growing their own
vegetables through the mentoring of Bexar County Master Gardener
volunteers. Each child is allotted a 3.5’x 28’ plot at the beautiful
San Antonio Botanical Garden. Children will have fun growing different
types of seeds, herbs, vegetables, and ornamental annual flowers.
Weekly educational gardening presentations will stimulate these young
minds. The children will also participate in fun, hands-on Junior
Master Gardener activities. In order to gain the most from the
learning experience and to help ensure successful growing,
participants are required to attend all sessions (two absences are
allowed). Families are welcome to share the gardening experience with
their child(ren); however, parents should remember that this is the
child’s plot and learning experience.

another day for homeschoolers to participate. So, now you can choose
to either come on Monday, Wednesday, or both! The time is the same for
both days, 12:30-2:00. Both classes are free of charge.
I have set up a Yahoo group to help with communication
between us all regarding the class. I will be sending an invitation to
join the group to all of the homeschool group emails that I am aware
of. The yahoo group is:
SAhomeschoolPE@yahoogroups.com and if I've figured it out
right, the way to subscribe is this:

ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING Happens once a month, the first
Saturday of the month, 7:30 pm at Incarnate Word Univ next to
Central Market. The dances are partner dances done in a long line
of couples, as seen in the latest Pride and Prejudice movie. There
is no footwork or steps to learn, the couples dance figures that
move them up and down the line. It is a great activity for the
whole family. Suggested donation for adults is $2.00, and kids are
always free. From Broadway, enter the driveway across from Denny's
and follow the signs back to the Garden Room.
INTERNATIONAL DANCING Takes place every Friday at Lions
Field Rec Center, 2809 Broadway (at Mulberry) Yes it is a senior
center, but young people are invited for international dancing on
Fridays, 7:30 pm. These dances are easy and mostly line or circle
dances from countries like Romania, Greece, Israel, and France, among
others. The dances and music are traditional, we learned them from
dance teachers from the respective countries. So it's a great
opportunity to learn about other cultures, choose an activity that
provides some exercise, and suitable for the whole family, because
there's no smoking or alcohol here! Kids come free, and for adults
$2.00 suggested donation. Wear comfortable, sensible shoes, and casual
clothes.
The Home School group is open to all ages and grade levels. It
is recommended that children be able to swim at least one length
of a 25 yard pool to enroll. Instruction is designed to
accommodate a variety of swim abilities. The Wave Home School
program is geared toward helping Home Schoolers fulfill their PE
requirement, while becoming water safe, better swimmers and having
fun at the same time.
The group trains at the Alamo Heights High School (6900 Broadway)
on Monday, Wed. and Friday at 1:15 pm. Your children can attend any or
all of those 3 days that work best. Home School swimmers may compete
at the weekend meets, if desired. By participating in an early
afternoon practice, the evening hours belong to your family. Please
call Coach Susan, for try-out information: 210-488-1923.
