We are having a GREAT experience with Tennis for Homeschoolers,
taught by Windcrest Tennis Center!! They are so friendly, so
professional, so polite, and so fun!! My kids are having a wonderful
time, and all of my children are asking to continue lessons there!
I encourage you to come and check out the class; the best time to
see it right now is on Thursdays, from 2-330pm. The suggested age
range is 10+ (but I think a 9 year old would probably do just fine.)
The class is offered on Thursdays, 2-330pm. ( A Tuesday class is
planned, but there have not been enough students on Tuesdays yet to
warrant a Tuesday class. If Tuesdays work better for you, and
you know you want to play, please call them! Otherwise, come try the
class on a Thursday! If there are enough students, they can offer
Tuesday AND Thursday, and you can take lessons once OR twice per week,
on either day or both).
They have put this class together just for
homeschoolers, and on the very first day, my kids learned forehand,
backhand, some hitting strategies, and played the instructor in a
mini-game!
The cost is $95/month, which covers
both Tuesday and Thursday for
3 hours of
instruction per week, which broken down monthly is less than $8 per
hour of instruction, which is an excellent price for the top-notch
instruction. (
I believe that the cost is half that for one day per week, but
please call and ask. Also
Please ask about their Pay-What-You-Can Program if cost
is prohibitive.) This class has just begun and you can start at any
time, it is not too late to join in the fun! You are welcome to try a
class before you decide!

www.MasterMath.info offers
a free Middle School Math curriculum, with over 100 sequential lessons
on the concepts needed to prepare a student for high school math. Each
lesson includes a fun, 10 – 15 minute video lesson covering that
lesson’s concepts, and allowing the student to “You Try It”. The video
lessons are accompanied by a Worksheet to print and practice the
concepts taught in the lesson, plus a self-grading on-line quiz, which
show how to correctly do any problem the student misses on the quiz.
All this material is free!
MasterMath also offers you a way to take your student to the next
level. Adding some private tutoring to the free lessons will allow me
to either remediate, if the student hasn’t mastered the concepts, or
push the student further, if she “gets it”. I personally conduct all
of the tutoring sessions.
These one hour lessons are conducted over
GoToMeeting, a safe, secure virtual meeting website. The student
sees me and my computer screen, hears me, and can solve problems I put
on my screen. I can hear the student, and see his computer screen. All
you need is an internet connection, and a microphone on your computer
(or a telephone). It’s a Virtual Classroom experience!
The normal price for tutoring is $35 for one session, $105 for 4
sessions, or $175 for 8 sessions. BUT, for any sessions purchased
before October 12, 2011, I’ll double your credits! Purchase a lesson
for $35, I’ll give you two lessons. Purchase 8 lessons for $175, I’ll
give you 16 lessons! That’s less than $11 per hour!
You can use these lessons whenever you need them. There is no need
to schedule them all at once. Just schedule a lesson whenever you
think it would be helpful. At the risk of sounding like I’m
selling cars, let me throw out one more incentive. Purchase lessons
between now and October 6th, and I’ll throw in free Quarterly Exams
for the rest of this year. After a student has completed a quarter,
I’ll send you a test that will assess the student’s comprehension of
the concepts covered during that quarter. Return the Quarterly Exam to
me, I’ll grade it, and return it to you with comments on what needs to
be worked on further.
Help your student get the most out of MasterMath. Add some
one-on-one tutoring sessions. Visit
MasterMath – Schedule A Session to take your student’s math
education to the next level.

Picture Your World, sponsored by Green Spaces Alliance of South
Texas, has been in operation for 10 years. We provide 7 nature/photo
workshops to kids 8-18 during the school year. In the past, many
homeschoolers have participated in our workshops as well as our spring
photo competition. In fact, I will be giving a special workshop on
October 11 at Medina River Natural Area to homeschoolers during the
school day. Our workshops are normally held Sundays from 1-4:30 at
various outdoor locations. I'm attaching a calendar of our events.
Each workshop consists of information about taking good photos, a
nature walk with a Master Naturalist, and a short critique of some of
the photos taken on our walk. We provide the location, water, snacks,
a professional photographer as an instructor, a Master Naturalist, and
a camera for those that don't have one. (We'll burn CD's to send to
each individual who has borrowed a camera.) Cost of the workshop is
$10. for Green Spaces Alliancer members and $15. for non members. Go

The Art Time program develops creative thinking and fosters
self-expression through art. Each class starts with a warm-up exercise
that targets specific thinking skills and stimulates creative process.
Then children apply what they’ve just learned to the art technique
presented that day. Students will work with variety of high quality
materials including soft/oil pastels, foil, watercolors, rice paper,
acrylics, clay and much more…. Some of the art projects are designed
in the styles of the world’s famous artists. While learning new art
techniques and discovering different styles, it is up to the children
to decide exactly how their art will turn out.

Since 2002, Green Spaces Alliance has introduced thousands of
children to
photography and the wonders of nature through the Picture Your
World Youth Photography Project. Starting in September and ending in
April, Green Spaces’ program instructor, a professional photographer,
and a naturalist lead monthly workshops that teach students the basics
of photography and build their appreciation for the natural world. The
workshops take place at beautiful outdoor sites throughout the San
Antonio area, such as Government Canyon, Medina River Natural Area,
and the Land Heritage Institute.
In May, the program culminates
with a nature photography contest that awards cash prizes. Green
Spaces exhibits the winning and honorable mention photographs and
honors participating student at an annual photo exhibit and awards
ceremony.
Picture Your World is open to all interested students age 8-18.
The students meet in the afternoon from 1-4:30 p.m. See the sign-up
form for exceptions to this rule. Parents are welcome to attend. Green
Spaces provides digital cameras to students who wish to borrow one, or
participants may bring their own cameras. Each workshop costs $10 for

I'm organizing an informal group for homeschoolers who live on or
very near to Fort Sam Houston. This will be mostly a social group with
only a few meetups per month, but it will provide the opportunity to
get to know other homeschoolers in our own area. Our first meet and
greet will be during the first week of September. If you would like to
be included in these plans, please send me an email at:
morning2you@hotmail.com.
Also, feel free to forward this message to your friends and neighbors.

Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio has a great need for
volunteers, ages 14 & up, for our construction crews. While our
greatest need is on Fridays and Saturdays, we have weekday
opportunities as well. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. Volunteers generally
work from 7:45 until approximately 3:00 p.m. If construction does not
interest you, lunch crews to provide meals to our volunteers are also
needed.
All volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult! All
volunteers that are on the worksite are required to sign a waiver. A
separate waiver is required by all persons 18 or under and must be
signed by the volunteer and their parent or legal guardian. Both the
adult and minor waiver forms are available online. Waivers are
available at the bottom of the page.
For safety reasons, we are
unable to accommodate youth under the age of 14 on the build site, in
the warehouse, or as a volunteer in the Habitat for Humanity office.
Youth 14 years or older are welcome on some of the days of the build,
as long as they are with a supervising adult in a ratio of at least
one adult per every four children. Youth must also have a waiver
signed by their parent or legal guardian.
Every youth volunteer
must wear a hard hat at all times except on landscaping days where no
other construction is taking place. They should not be on site when
construction is going on. Your building schedule will tell you which
days are authorized for youth or contact Volunteer Services.
A
volunteer must be 18 or older to use power tools.
14 and 15 year
olds are allowed to paint, landscape, pick-up trash, move dirt,
provide and serve lunches, etc. They cannot do general carpentry.
16 and 17 year olds are allowed to do general carpentry, which can
include activities such as hammering, putting in insulation, etc. They
cannot do excavation, demolition, roofing, use power tools or work at
heights above 6 feet. They must follow all rules pertaining to hardhat
use, height requirements and power tools.
Individuals under the age
of 18 cannot volunteer in the Home Centers.
All youth are required
to wear appropriate safety equipment for the task they are performing.
Regardless of the tasks being performed, volunteers should at all
times wear appropriate clothing to the site including thick soled,
closed toed shoes.

Students (beginners to intermediate level) will learn the art of
dance in a fun, nurturing, and encouraging environment. Dancers will
learn correct placement, posture and execution; all of which will aid
in building a strong foundation for further dance training. Once a
student has reached this level Jazz may be added to the repertoire. Stone Oak Dance Company believes in
the love of dance. We also believe that to nurture a love of dance,
you first have to nurture the dancer. At Stone Oak Dance Company you
will find teachers who believe in developing the best students through
individualized attention with emphasis placed on proper technique,
placement, respect for others as well as oneself, creativity and
progress through self discipline. Students build confidence through
class progression, performance opportunities and learning to dance not
only as an expression of the art, but also as an expression of
themselves. Stone Oak Dance Company offers an array of classes
including ballet, tap, jazz, and hip hop. We are always looking for
new styles to offer, but believe that a foundation in ballet is a
must. Our ballet classes are inspired by Vaganova and Cecchetti
methods and focus on correct placement to ensure a long and healthy
dance career. Since Stone Oak Dance Company believes in
teaching to the unique needs of every student we are committed to
tracking the progress of each student through parent/teacher
communication as well as semester reports which include

where students develop their idea for a science or engineering
experiment in microgravity. A proposal is due by November 1 each
year that describes the experiment. Selected student teams then
proceed to design and build their experiment. When completed, the
experiment is sent to NASA Glenn in Cleveland, Ohio for operation in

The Magik Theatre announces the final show of its 2010-2011 season
- an exciting new adaptation of THE JUNGLE BOOK, which played to sold
out crowds during its 2006-2007 season. Adapted faithfully from
Rudyard Kipling’s source stories by David Morgan, with music by Jaime
Ramirez, THE JUNGLE BOOK begins with the discovery of a man-child by a
wolf pack in the Indian jungle. Named Mowgli, the boy is raised by
wolf parents and educated in the Jungle Law by Bagheera, a black
panther, and Baloo, a great bear. Complicating their efforts are the
Bandar Log, a fun-loving tribe of monkeys, who kidnap Mowgli. He is
rescued with the help of python Kaa, only to be threatened by Shere
Khan, a carnivorous and hungry tiger, and his jackal accomplice
Tabaqui. In the end, Mowgli must decide whether to stay in the jungle
or take his place in the world of men.
Credited with inspiring
both Neil Gaiman’s Newbery Medal-winning THE GRAVEYARD BOOK and David
Wroblewski’s THE STORY OF EDGAR SAWTELLE, Kipling’s Mowgli stories
continue to resonate long after the author’s lifetime by getting at
the heart of what it takes to raise a child and ready him for a
potentially dangerous world. Filled with action, drama, comedy, music,
and dance, Magik’s vivid production of THE JUNGLE BOOK will enthrall
audiences of all ages! Location:

INFINITY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY, Inc. is a non-profit,
non-denominational, Christian school whose purpose is to glorify God
by partnering with parents to nurture each child spiritually, foster
academic excellence and ultimately equip each child to understand,
articulate and defend a Christian world-view. INFINITY
CHRISTIAN ACADEMY, Inc. combines the best features of a traditional
classroom education with the strengths of parent-led schooling for the
goal of academic excellence within the framework of Christian
discipleship. This concept of schooling gives parents the gift of time
and the ability to take a more-hands-on role in their child’s
education. INFINITY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY, Inc. seeks to partner
with parents to provide: curriculum, direction and planning, classroom
instruction, weekly lesson plans, daily assignments, periodic testing,
class projects, labs, field trips, parties, and grade reports.
For the students it is our goal to provide: fellowship, encouragement,
challenge, coaching, positive competition, accountability, godly
character development, and foster spiritual growth. We
accomplish this through two days a week teacher-led classroom
instruction with the remaining 3 days of school assignments done under
the encouraging supervision of the parents at home. The parents
partner with the school to mentor their children in Christian
behavior, disciplined work habits, and to co-teach lessons.
The essential core subjects of Math, Language Arts (english, reading,
writing, spelling), Science, and History, are taught on
Tuesdays/Thursdays. An elective course in PE will be offered
after-school on the same days. Infinity Christian Academy,
Inc. does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national, or
ethnic origin in the administration of any of its policies or
programs. Admissions are contingent on space, abilities of the
student, philosophy, and willingness of the family and student to
participate within the school guidelines.
Our Horse Course is a great way for home school students to earn an
elective or physical education credit for their schooling programs.
The course is designed for beginners (no experience necessary) that
want to learn more about caring for and riding horses! At the end of
the Fall semester, all Horse Course students will also be Level 1
Certified with the CHA. This
is a great opportunity to be a part of an international horsemanship
organization, as well as a friendly and local riding group.
Please read more about our course, here:

The Art Time program develops creative thinking and fosters
self-expression through art. Each class starts with a warm-up exercise
that targets specific thinking skills and stimulates creative process.
Then children apply what they’ve just learned to the art technique
presented that day. Students will work with variety of high quality
materials including soft/oil pastels, foil, watercolors, rice paper,
acrylics, clay and much more…. Some of the art projects are
designed in the styles of the world’s famous artists. While learning
new art techniques and discovering different styles, it is up to the
children to decide exactly how their art will turn out. All the
projects are different from the previous sessions. Wednesdays,

Are you looking for a String Teacher (violin, viola, cello, string
bass)? I currently have openings in my home studio. I
offer lessons in my home in the Northwest Crossing neighborhood (very
close to Northwest Crossing Elementary School). I prefer to
teach in the mornings or early afternoons. The fee is $25 per
half hour lesson, tuition due on the first lesson of each month for
the month. I teach both private and semi-private lessons.
I earned a Bachelor of Music Degree from Brigham Young University in
1985. I have taught cello, violin, viola, and string bass since
then. I have also taught recorder ensembles and youth choirs.
In California (where I just recently moved from) I taught 5th grade
strings and recorders in several elementary schools. For the
past several years I have greatly enjoyed teaching home school
orchestras and recorder ensembles. I have home schooled my own
children for the past 11 years. I currently have two sons at
home, a 16 year old and a 12 year old. If you are interested
in lessons for the cello, violin, viola, string bass, or recorder,
please contact me. Lisa Harline 210-647-7504

needed to conquer the SAT and PSAT/NMSQT. Students will learn the
logical patterns behind standardized test questions as well as
necessary strategies that can help increase their test scores
tremendously! As a homeschool mom, Jean helped both her children

Good Day! C_a_CHE,(Collaborating and Coordinating Homeschool
Education), is the beginning of a possible co-op I would like to
initiate this Fall. I would like to have the children meet for about 3
hrs. 1 day a week. This is not an elective co-op, nor is it to be
typical, "sit down and do work", on the typical subjects we
incorporate in our own individual teaching (reading, writing, math,
science, civics, and art.) What I foresee this being is something
similar to a unit study but not. I would like us, teachers, to take a
topic (approved as a group at a planning meeting in the summer)and
find away to present the topic/subject to the group in a way that they
have not understood/seen/been exposed to in the past. In addition to
presenting this topic, I would like to incorporate helping the
students to begin or continue learning how to critically think. One
other thing we need to remember is that not all students will be
fluent readers, but I think you see variations of levels in every
course entered, I think that is something important to be remember
when it is your time to teach.
So, I think that brings me to the obvious, I would like each
teacher to take turns. I think the above gives the general idea of
what I would like to create. In summary: utilize the general subjects,
strongly encourage/present critical thinking and how to utilize it,
incorporate creativity and art, meet for 3 hrs. 1 day/wk, start Fall
2011, other siblings are always welcome (entertaining/incorporating
them will need to be determined.) My desire is that this can be a
group in which we can all learn a little something (if not a lot) from
each other (students included). One other thing, we are all so
excitingly diverse, and I hope that this can be a group in which
personal religious, political, or controversial topics can be left at
the door so that we can work together smoothly and with a universal
goal...educating and elevating the students and families involved.
Thank you so much for your interest! You can email me with
questions/comments: Sdreth4@yahoo.com
With summer half way over, are you beginning to ponder your home
school options? Have you ever desired to classically educate your
children but weren't quite sure how to implement this proven approach
in your own home school? Have you heard of or wondered if Classical
Conversations is right for you and your home school?
Classical Conversations is a Christ-centered, classical approach to
home education. Classical Conversations seeks to do more than just
give students knowledge in particular subject areas like history or
science. We strive, through our experienced tutors, to help parents
train their students to view all subjects as glorifying the Lord while
also revealing aspects of His divine nature. Concurrently, students
also acquire life-long learning skills. Students/families meet weekly
on a campus to form a Classical Christian community.
The North Central San Antonio community (located near Loop 1604 and
Blanco Rd.), offers classes for K4 through high school and currently
has a limited number of openings in Challenge A, Challenge I, and
Challenge III.
Class size is limited to 12 students and only a few spots remain in
these program levels: Challenge A is appropriate for 7th-9th grades
(12- 15 year old) and seeks to introduce students to the rigorous
coursework of the Challenge program. It bridges students from the
earlier parent-directed studies into a more self-directed stage of
learning. Group Discussions begin to play a larger role as logic
skills develope. Students learn the basics of writing and research
skills as well as geography, biology, literature, math, rhetoric, and
Latin.
Challenge I is appropriate for 9th-11th grades and encourages
students to think deeply and critically while improving their writing
and research skills. Students strengthen their classical learning
skills through a focus on American literature and a study of American
government, economics, and policies as well as literature, science,
math, and Latin.
Challenge III is appropriate for 10th-12th grades and
conceptualizes abstract ideas which improves clear thinking.
Students are encouraged to polish their literary writing, presenting,
and analyzing skills. Spanish, Shakespeare, American history, advanced
logic, philosophy, and higher level math integrate student learning
skills across academic subjects.
If you would like more information on any of these Classical
Conversations Challenge levels at the North Central San Antonio
campus, please contact the tutor directly: Challenge A - Carol

Home Education Magazine publisher Helen Hegener is a defendant in
a lawsuit which was filed against her by Mimi Rothschild, Howard
Mandel, and Learning by Grace, Inc. in late fall of last year, based
on a short news item which appeared at the Home Education Magazine
website in August, 2010.
The News & Commentary post commented on and directed readers to
information about a lawsuit which was filed against Heather Idoni, a
homeschooling mother, originator of Homeschooling BOYS and owner of
Beloved Books (home of the Sugar Creek Gang audio series). Heather is
also a popular and respected speaker at conferences, edits The
Homeschooler's Notebook, and also manages EasyFunSchool as well as
several other websites and homeschooling email groups.
Mimi Rothschild, Howard Mandel, and Learning by Grace, Inc. filed
the original lawsuit against Heather in May, 2010. On November 2,
2010, because she linked to and commented on the lawsuit, HEM
publisher Helen Hegener was added to the pre-existing lawsuit.
Information about the plaintiffs, Mimi Rothschild, Howard Mandel, and
Learning by Grace, Inc., was presented in this 2008 editorial: Mimi
Rothschild: Taking Over Homeschooling?
At this time we are seeking factual, first-hand support from anyone
who may have information relevant to the issues raised in this
lawsuit. You can respond in the comments below this post, via our
online contact form, or via email to Helen Hegener.
As part of Home Education Magazine's 28-year-long commitment to
keeping the homeschool community informed, the court files and
information on Learning By Grace, Inc. et al. v. Idoni are presented
at this case-specific web page.
Comments on the case are welcome, but Learning By Grace, Inc., et
al. v. Idoni is an active defamation suit. Be truthful, respectful and
please do not spam.

Hi! My name is Lisa. I am a homeschooling mom of 3. I have been
very frustrated in my search for a group that meets our needs so I
have created my own. I'm creating a group for homeschool teens so that
they can get together, have fun, talk, laugh and hang out. Here are
our requirements for joining: *Must be homeschooled. *Must be
between the ages of 13 - 19. *This is a SECULAR homeschool group.
All faiths & beliefs are welcome. Respect of other peoples beliefs is
mandatory. *Drugs, Alcohol & Nicotine are not permitted at any get
together or activity. If a teen is caught using any of these during an
event they will be asked to leave and not return. *Parent
participation is required. A parent must attend at least the 1st 3 get
togethers with their child. After that a parent may drop off their
child for an event as long as they get permission in advance. *RSVP'ing
for events by stated date is mandatory. Just showing up is not allowed A
minimum of 4 teens will be required for an event to occur. If it is
not met then the event will be cancelled.
Activities will include
movies, parties, bowling, skating etc. The kids can suggest activities
they would like to do & if the parents agree then we will try to make
it happen.
I hope you will join our group and we can work together
to give our teenagers the friends, activities and memories that they
will treasure. Being a teenager is hard..being homeschooled comes with
added challenges. Email for more infolisasanantoniogirl@yahoo.com

By appointment, we provide free, live, expert help to students in
South Texas, using VoIP (live voice online) and our interactive
digital board.
We
strongly encourage parent(s), guardian(s), or teachers to be present
with the student(s) during these live, online sessions.
To
participate in a live, online session, a student can use any computer
with a good internet connection, speakers and a microphone (or a
hands-free phone). Webcams are not used.
We can help
Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday mornings, and Tuesday or Thursday
evenings, and we can host live group sessions for up to eight (8)
students.*
Questions? We'd be glad to answer your
questions. Please send us an email with your questions to
info@mytexastutor.org.

I am trying to gather a small group of bright kids for a new
school experience. Home school gives my son the quiet
environment, the support and understanding that no school offers but
because our kids need much practice interacting with others I would
like to gather a team of learners. Since academics are fairly
easy I would like to devote at least 25% of the school day working on
life skills. For this to work I need a few other families to
join this project.
I am looking for people to pool
resources, including enough financial backing to hire a social worker
or psychologist to mediate social training. At this time I am looking
for 7th graders. Kids without Aspergers would also be welcome if
you feel you have a child with strong academics but weak social
skills. Contact Terri Ashby at
termat@grandecom.net for more information.

outdoor/indoor recreational & cultural activities are available across
the region. Festivals, scenic overlooks, bird sanctuaries, shopping in
old downtowns, the metropolitan areas of San Antonio & Houston, a
countryside blanketed with wildflowers & trees, ranging from lordly
pines to scrub mesquite, beaches, lakes, rivers and historic landmarks
can all be enjoyed when you drive across the Independence Trail
Region.

provide support for the unique needs of children who are
intellectually gifted, whose needs are not being met in traditional

by objective criteria, WISC-IV, WIPSII, Stanford achievement test,
