From the heated debating floor of Independence Hall, to the bloodied fields
of Gettysburg and the empowering steps of the Lincoln Memorial, American history
is far more than just dates and speeches. The Congressional Academy for American
History and Civics takes students on an exploration of the American experience
with a careful study of three of America's most critical eras through the
Declaration of Independence, the Gettysburg Address and, Martin Luther King's "I
Have a Dream" speech.
Participating students will spend twelve days in our nation's capitol, Washington, DC. They will participate in seminars and visit historical sites in and around Washington, DC. They will take two day-trips, one to Philadelphia and the other to Gettysburg, to visit the sites where these three historical documents came to life.
One hundred and two students will be selected to attend this two-week Academy
in Washington, DC. All hotel, meal, and tour expenses are paid for by the U.S.
Department of Education, and students receive a $250 stipend for travel to and
from Washington, DC. Students also receive three-hours of college credit for
participating in the Academy.
