Questions to ask on College Visits

How you phrase the questions will depend if you're talking to a student guide or ask questions of an admissions person.

What percentage of students go home on the weekend?

Are there many planned campus activities on the weekend?

Do people study in the dorms or mainly in the library?

How often do you interact with your professors outside of class?

How difficult is it to register for classes required for graduation?

How complicated is it to get your financial aid?

How many professors could you ask for recommendations?

How much group work is there in classes?

How often does the internet go down or slows?

How hard is it to get maintenance done in the dorms?

Do the police offer escorted walks after dark?

How many papers do you write a semester? How long are they?

How often do you meet with your advisor?

Have you completed any internships? How did you find out about them?

Do you ever have problems finding books at the library?

Where and what kind of parties do you go to?

What kind of clubs are you involved in?

How many students have cars on campus?

How hard is it to find a parking space?

Have you ever had a parking ticket?

Is there an honor code?

How competitive are the students?

What sort of religious services are offered on campus?

How many/active are religious student groups?

How active are students in public service activities?

How hard is it to take classes outside your major?

How does the registration process work?

Are there lots of citations for underage drinking by campus police?

Is drinking allowed in the dorms?

Are there any dorms/floors for groups of students with a specific interest? (honors, non-alcohol/drug, foreign languages, etc.)

What sort of services are there for job placement?

What sort of support is there for preparation for med/law/graduate school?

What do you like best about the school?

What has been your favorite class?

In what areas do you think the school could improve?

How active is the Greek system?

What other schools did you apply to?

Which courses/departments are the hardest/easiest?

NISD Community Education SAT Preparation

This course prepares you for the Verbal and Math Reasoning sections of the SAT tests. Each class is two sessions; six hours on a Saturday, from 9:00am-3:00pm and, two hours on a weekday, i.e. Mon., Tues., Wed., Thurs from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Materials are included in the cost of the tuition. $55.

Paying for College Made Easy

This comprehensive course will cover: how to manage the financial aid process, traditional financial aid programs, tax credits and deductions, academic programs to reduce costs, public service and other higher education financing opportunities to assist with self-planning. It is designed for families with students in grades 11-12 and activities are for both traditional and home-schooling students. Dr. Lynn Byrne is the Assistant Director of Financial Assistance at the University of the Incarnate Word. A $12.50 workbook fee can be paid to the instructor in class or can be downloaded from www.lulu.com/hillcountryecs/.

NEISD Community Education SAT Preparation

Each student will receive the text "The Official SAT Study Guide," which includes critical reading strategies, writing practices for the PSAT and math strategies. The workshop offers intensive practice. $30 materials fee payable to instructor at first class. Bring a calculator and pencil to each class. Tami Shaw is a high school counselor and Karen Taliaferro is a high school math instructor. When registering for the class, please sign in and register with the student's information.
