Dreams for Youth offers Homeschool Fencing
by Carolyn Wheat
Today, Kyle Kodrowsky is a happy, energetic 11-year
old who is home-schooled and fences twice a week at the Dreams for Youth
gym. Nine months ago, Kyle was a discipline problem at school, was acting
out at home, and had very low esteem. His mother had been diagnosed with
breast cancer and his fears and frustrations were getting the best of
him. According to Kyle’s mom, Maribeth, fencing helped turn him around.
Maribeth pulled Kyle out of public school. At the
same time, a friend told her the San Antonio Sports Foundation offered
fencing and gymnastics classes for home-schooled children. “This was the
perfect place for Kyle to release his frustrations,” says Meribeth. “It’s
also taught him self-discipline. He’s a totally different child now.”
Almost 30 home-schooled children fence at the Dreams
for Youth gym twice a week. Many of their siblings take gymnastics and
the mothers couldn’t be happier. “Fencing has helped my son learn
coordination and it has given him control of his body,” says Jewel
Hoffmann, who has been home-schooling her children for 5 ½ years. Her
daughter loves tumbling and Jewel says this is one of the few programs she
finds affordable so that both her children can participate.
