The general power plant tour consists of a visit to the coal-fired J. K.
Spruce Power Plant located at Calaveras Lake in southeast Bexar County. The
students will see the plant boiler and turbine-generator. The plant boiler
produces high pressure steam which then turns the turbine and generates
electricity. The tour includes a trip to the control room where plant operations
are monitored, to the CPS coal yard where the low-cost fuel is stored and to the
rotary dumper which unloads the coal from the rail cars. Then groups are
escorted to the rail car maintenance facility where CPS maintains its own rail
cars which transport low sulfur coal from Wyoming. The tour lasts approximately
two-and-one-half hours.
Please note the following tour guidelines:
- Students must be in the 5th grade or above
- Groups should consist of at least 10 and no more than 60 persons.
- Please arrange for one adult advisor for every 10 students.
- All are advised to wear pants and comfortable, rubber-soled walking shoes
