Imagine the city of tomorrow: no pollution, no crime, hovercraft buzzing
overhead, holovision, teleportation. Maybe it’s located on the moon, or the
South Pole or under the ocean. Whatever you envision, it pales in comparison to
the dreams of the 7th and 8th grade students who competed in the
National Engineers Week Future
City Competition(TM).
This program offers students a fun way to learn about different kinds of
engineering by dealing with the real-world problems associated with creating a
livable city of the future. Students, working in teams with a volunteer-mentor,
first generate a computerized design of a future city, then build a scale model,
research and write an essay on an assigned technical topic, and finally publicly
present their projects to a panel of judges. |
