I teach piano, jazz and improvisation at the Musical Arts Center of
San Antonio. I teach the normal piano things. What I really enjoy teaching
is improvisation. I tried learning it when I was home educated. My piano
teacher taught only classical music and I had to kind of figure it out
myself. It was so frustrating. I love taking away that mystery and allowing
students to find their creative voice. I also find improvisation helps give
purpose to learning theory. If students haven't played before then we begin
with the basics. For people who already have a piano teacher have a great
6-week program. I allow them to use whatever style they want to play. Most
of my students have gone on to minister on their church's worship team.
