Four Spanish frontier missions, part of a colonization
system that stretched across the Spanish Southwest in the 17th, 18th, 19th
centuries, are preserved here. They include Missions San Jose, San Juan, Espada,
and Concepcion. The park, containing many cultural sites along with some natural
areas, was established in 1978. The park covers about 819 acres.
Please consider San Antonio Missions National Historical
Park for your Class Field Trip this year. We offer a variety of Ranger-led
education programs designed for grades 3 through 8. Admission to the Park and
these Ranger led services are free of charge. Each program incorporates hands-on
activities to assist with the learning process and includes pre and post visit
activities with accompanying TEKS requirements.
What better way to learn history than to see the places
founded by the early Spanish missionaries and see how this new culture changed
the native people forming the beginnings of the Hispanic culture we see today in
South Texas. Visiting the missions and their related acequia system provides
learning experiences that enhance and reinforce subjects taught in the
classroom. The park also welcomes teachers who prepare and lead their own field
trip activities. Please be aware that these groups need to register prior to
their arrival date at (210) 534-8857 ext. 258.
